Community Highlights: Meet Jason of Planet Escape Room

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Jen.

Hi Jason, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi everyone –

I was born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley (shoutout Temple City), before it became what it is today. Went to school at UCSD and moved to Taiwan for 2 years after graduating before settling back to SGV and been here since.

I bounced around different professions before finding my passion in what I do now – I’m a real estate agent and loan officer. I genuinely enjoy helping my clients with all real estate needs. Buying or selling a home, or refinancing your loan, all can be a daunting process. Hidden fees, unexpected surprises, or lack of knowledge. These are all challenges someone can face without the help of the right professional. I take pride in being transparent and earning the trust of my clients.

I also own an escape room business located in the South Bay, on the border of Torrance and Lomita. It’s called Planet Escape Room. There are hundreds of great escape rooms all over Southern California. We take pride in a personalized experience and a thorough debrief. Many of these escape rooms have 1 person running multiple rooms at once and you’re rushed out of the room after you finish. We never do that. All of our rooms are intricately designed, with beautiful sets, with just the right amount of challenge.

The last thing I do is emcee for weddings. This is my side gig, and it brings me so much joy to help a bride and groom have a memorable night. A celebration of love is a universal bond that brings all of us together. How can anyone NOT enjoy witnessing such a beautiful moment? It’s always an honor and privilege to be in the position to lead the crowd with my energy and coordinate a smooth celebration.

I love what I do. I believe what sets me apart from others is my energy, ability to connect with people, and transparency. These traits have helped me be a better professional in everything that I do.

In my spare time, I enjoy watching the Chargers and the NBA, going to the gym, swimming, and playing escape rooms. If I ever want a laugh, I’ll put on I Love You, Man.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I struggled to find my footing before I got into what I’m doing now. I took some risks, and they didn’t pan out. I started a business and had high hopes for it. But ultimately, it just didn’t work. You always hear the success stories. But with each success story, there are dozens that failed. I lost a substantial amount of money and 5 years of my life. I felt defeated and discouraged. But the tough times make me appreciate the position I’m in now so much more. It was hard to see at that time, but I’m thankful for it now. I won’t ever take it for granted.

As you know, we’re big fans of Planet Escape Room. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Yes, absolutely! There are hundreds of great escape rooms all over Southern California. At Planet Escape Room, we take pride in a personalized experience and a thorough debrief. Many of these escape rooms have 1 person running multiple rooms at once and you’re rushed out of the room after you finish. We never do that. All of our rooms are intricately designed, with beautiful sets, with just the right amount of challenge.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I can’t think of a particular childhood memory that ties into what I’m doing now, but random fact I ate a lot of TV dinners growing up, lol.
