Community Highlights: Meet Jacqueline Micallef of OC Learning Edge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Micallef.

Hi Jacqueline, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been an educator for a little over 30 years, with a strong focus on Early Childhood Education (ECE), which the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) defines as the developmental period from birth to age eight. Throughout my career, I have remained deeply passionate about the importance of these early years and the powerful impact they have on a child’s lifelong learning and development.

My journey has always centered on both teaching young children and educating parents about their vital role in their child’s growth. I have dedicated much of my professional life to helping families understand that the first years are a time of incredible brain development, curiosity, and potential. My goal has always been to empower parents and educators alike to create nurturing, responsive, and developmentally rich experiences that build a strong foundation for every child’s future.

About three years ago, I began tutoring on the side after my regular school hours. I quickly realized that the need for individualized academic support was tremendous. Within just a few weeks, the demand for my tutoring services grew exponentially through word of mouth alone. Seeing how much of an impact I could make, I decided to take a leap and open my own tutoring program, offering personalized support to students from preschool through the elementary years. This is how OC Learning Edge was born!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Like anything done with passion and a commitment to excellence, obstacles were inevitable. The teaching part came naturally to me — that’s where my heart is — but learning to manage the business side was full of unknowns and moments of insecurity. I had to step out of my comfort zone, learn new skills, and, yes, make mistakes along the way. Each challenge taught me something valuable about leadership, organization, and perseverance. Two years later, I’m proud to say I’m running a successful tutoring program and employing five dedicated part-time educators who share my passion for helping students thrive.

We’ve been impressed with OC Learning Edge, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our organization offers tutoring and enrichment classes for young students from preschool through sixth grade. We provide both private and semi-private sessions to accommodate different learning needs and budgets. Our programs cover math, English language arts, phonics, reading comprehension, essay writing, Spanish, and homework support, ensuring that students receive comprehensive academic assistance.

In addition, we offer a learning pod for homeschool families, serving students from Transitional Kindergarten through second grade. During this biweekly 3.5-hour drop-off program, we cover core subjects, as well as Spanish and social studies.

What sets us apart is our commitment to personalized education. We understand that every student learns differently and has unique strengths and challenges. Our teachers take the time to address each child’s individual needs, helping them grow, build confidence, and succeed academically. We take pride in providing high-quality instruction that is thoughtful, engaging, and tailored to each student.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The quality that has been most important to my success is passion—first and foremost. Beyond that, a combination of knowledge, ongoing education, and attention to detail has allowed me to provide high-quality instruction and support. I also prioritize partnering with parents, offering guidance and resources that help them support their child’s learning at home.

Equally important is taking a genuine interest in each student and family, being mindful of cultural differences and preferences, and acknowledging them in our approach. I make it a point to truly understand challenges, especially when working with students with special needs, as they often require individualized strategies and additional parent support. This combination of passion, knowledge, empathy, and collaboration has been key to creating meaningful educational experiences and strong relationships with families.
