Community Highlights: Meet Ivy Grigoryan of Grigoryan Blum & Grigoryan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivy Grigoryan

Hi Ivy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I suppose this story really starts when I was about 8-9 years old. My dad took me to court with him. I dressed up, brought a purse, and was completely in awe of my grand surroundings. When I got older, I couldn’t get enough Judge Judy, and between my dad and the Judge, I knew what I wanted to do in my life. After graduating from undergrad however, I wasn’t enthused with school. I took three years off from school to work. Although I take great pride in my time in the service industry and it taught me invaluable lessons in dealing with people, I eventually came to realize it wasn’t my passion. I took the LSATs and enrolled in law school. After passing the bar, I submitted an application to the Orange County District Attorney’s office. While my application was pending, I was working at my dad’s office. My dad’s practice consisted mostly of family law at that time. My boyfriend at the time, who is now my husband and law partner, was working in a personal injury office and told me I should start taking injury cases, and I did. I really enjoyed working on injury cases, and after about a year of working for other people, my husband and I decided to open up our own firm. When started our firm at our kitchen table with one client. Today, we focus solely on helping those that have been injured.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t say that I struggled, but I definitely did not take the straight path. I got my first job when I was 15 years old at a local restaurant bussing tables. I worked in restaurants for the next 10 years before I went to law school, even in high school and undergrad. I always enjoyed making money and having financial independence. I didn’t enjoy school for a long period of time, and I wasn’t committed to it, so law school seemed a long way off. But, from doing things on my own time and when I was ready, I eventually got to where I needed to be in life. I think taking time off and working in the service industry was really an advantage. Serving people, being able to handle different personalities, conflict resolution, multi-tasking, it all carries over to what I do today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Covid was an interesting time for us; I think maybe I was one of the few people who enjoyed the changes. Our family slowed down, we spent more time together, things were less stressful. We were fortunate that our business also thrived during this time. We continued to work hard and show up for our clients during this time. The ability to take depositions viz Zoom and court viz Zoomed has really made our practice even more efficient. During Covid, we even did a trial viz Zoom! It really revolutionized that practice of law, which doesn’t happen too often. I continue to carry these positives with me and into our business.
