Today we’d like to introduce you to Ian Asbury and Ari Stevens Zhang.
Hi Ian and Ari, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Ari: Since I was a little kid, I’ve always been interested in food and beverage. My grandmother was very receptive to my interest and encouraged me to play in the kitchen. I’ve been pretending to have my own cooking show since the first time I saw Julia Child on PBS! I’ve worked in all facets of hospitality on and off throughout my whole life. In the last couple of years, my dreams of having my own hospitality business became more realistic, and I realized that I could be a part of creating something I’m proud of.
Ian: From a young age, I just always found myself chatting with people from all walks of life and naturally assumed the role of a coordinator, which is probably why I’ve ended up in the hospitality industry today! I’ve transitioned from hosting parties to working in nightclubs, exploring food pop-ups, and now currently managing a wine bar. I’m passionate about uniting people through the intersection of food, wine, and music. Honestly, it’s one of life’s greatest pleasures, and it truly nourishes my soul.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Ari: This journey has felt like a deep space voyage into the unknown. Opening during the pandemic and navigating through the subsequent economic challenges has been a huge learning experience. I’d say the past two and a half years has been a free MBA crash course. We have definitely learned a lot.
Ian: The ups and downs are pretty wild. I heard someone say the other day, “You are either putting out fires or setting new ones to then put out later.” It requires a strong stomach and the determination to keep pushing forward. Most importantly, it demands the hope that everything will ultimately work out!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Good Clean Fun?
Ari: Our business, Good Clean Fun, is a natural wine shop and bar located in downtown Los Angeles. We specialize in offering low-intervention wines from around the world and delicious California-inspired Italian dishes to pair with them. We’re also proud of our low-ABV cocktail program.
What sets us apart and makes us particularly proud is our commitment to serving and selling wine in a less frivolous way. Our primary mission is to make natural wine more accessible to everyone, focusing on price points, styles, and presentation.
All our offerings are available for delivery through us and major delivery partners. Additionally, we have a fantastic wine club accessible through our website, gcfwines.com, allowing you to choose the number of bottles and wine styles for your box. Plus, becoming a member entitles you to a 10% discount on dine-in and retail purchases.
Ian: To add on to what Ari said, I think what makes us truly special is that we’re a versatile space where any vibe can happen. You can simply grab a drink, enjoy a big feast, visit before a concert, come for a first date, or celebrate your 20th date. That versatility is key. There are many restaurants where you cannot just go and have a drink – you feel compelled to eat a huge dinner. Or, you go to other wine bars and they just have snacks. What if you are hungry and want to chow down? What I take pride in is our attentiveness. We are super people-obsessed and are always trying to deliver the absolute best possible experience for our guests.
What were you like growing up?
Ari: Growing up, I was quite the nerdy kid. I always had my head in a book when I wasn’t glued to the TV, indulging in shows about history, music, or food. I’ve also always had ‘business ventures’ from an early age. My very first venture was wrapping Christmas presents for my uncles when I was just four years old. From then on, it seems I’ve never really stopped hustling.
Ian: Me growing up is exactly what you see today – like nothing has changed at all! I’m always on the lookout to connect with people and ensure they have the absolute best time.
