Community Highlights: Meet Emily Brown of Genetic Garden

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Brown.

Hi Emily, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started out as a picky eater… parsley on my butter pasta? Send it back! Needless to say, it’s been a long and circuitous route to a Functional and Integrative Nutrition Practitioner! In graduate school for nutrition and exercise physiology my mom did 23 and Me and because of a lack of genetic or epigenetic knowledge, she would have applied her results and their brief report in a detrimental way. She doesn’t have the “power protein” from ACTN3 gene, so her report stated she was meant for endurance activity. That’s her strength. Yet, we need to offset our genetic weaknesses for optimal health and longevity, not avoid them. Not to mention her lifestyle factors: a post-menopausal woman. This population needs resistance training more than ever. As we age and hormones shift we are at a higher potential for bone density and muscular mass loss. So, had she leaned into her interpretation of the report she would have done herself a disservice. That’s when I knew I needed to help translate these tests into positive actionable steps. Genetic Garden was born! Now it’s grown to incorporate not only genetics when creating personalized wellness plans but also functional health markers like hormones, toxins, nutrient deficiencies, and food/environmental sensitivities for the most comprehensive plan out there!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Learning to wear all the hats as a CEO as been a challenge for sure. I was armed and ready with nutritional and holistic health advice but turning that into a thriving business took a lot of work. I love asking for help, I do believe it’s one of my strengths, so I’ve learned to reach out more quickly as the years so go by. “More brains the better” is my motto!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Genetic Garden?
Genetic Garden aims to give you the tools to take ownership of your health. I want to spread preventative healthcare to the masses so we can understand our bodies and our baselines so that when we feel outside of “optimal” we can make changes quickly and prevent chronic issues. I take the entire person into account: their stress, sleep, habits, passions, support system, hormones, toxins, nutrients, and genetics. This enables me to make the smallest changes possible to their current lifestyle for the biggest positive impact. I’m known for approachable flexible wellness. I love life and its indulgences so I’d never ask a client to refrain! My current and new offering is there to support that principle- that life should be fun and we shouldn’t have guilt or shame around those trips, weddings kids’ birthday party splurges. It’s a 5 day whole-food based reset that goes right to your house with recipes, holistic health tips, fasting techniques, daily supplements, AND your groceries. The Custom Cleanse kit also includes a functional health test kit so that we can customize the cleanse based on food sensitivities, hormones and toxins. Because if you’re doing a cleanse with eggs yet you have an egg allergy that will do more harm than good. Personalization is always key at Genetic Garden.

Any big plans?
Big plans ahead!! I have a supplement product line coming very soon because food just isn’t enough anymore. I am working on a nutrition bar that will launch this year. And the Cleanse will be offered seasonally for seasonal menus that come every three months because staying healthy is much easier than getting healthy!
