Community Highlights: Meet Dr. Biejay Tan of Hybrid Rx Rehab, Chiropractic & Performance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Biejay Tan.

Hi Dr. Biejay, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey started back in 2012 as a strength and conditioning coach. For years, I worked in commercial gyms like 24 Hour Fitness and Equinox, helping people move better, get stronger, and reach their fitness goals. But over time, I started to notice a pattern. A lot of the clients who came to me were dealing with lingering injuries or pain that traditional rehab and insurance-based care never fully addressed.

I became curious. I began taking continuing education courses, shadowing mentors, and diving deep into the science of human movement and rehabilitation. The more I learned, the more I realized there was a massive gap in our healthcare system, between injury care, true rehabilitation, and long-term performance. Too many people were being told to “rest,” given generic exercises, or just treated for symptoms, not solutions.

I knew I wanted to be different. I didn’t want to just “fix” people temporarily. I wanted to empower them to understand their bodies, build resilience, and get back to doing what they love without fear of re-injury.
So I made the decision to go back to school and earn my Doctorate in Chiropractic, specializing in sports and movement-based rehabilitation. But even that came with its own challenges. Many people still think of chiropractors as quick visits and quick cracks. What I do is different. My approach is hands-on when necessary, but more importantly, it’s mindful and empowering.

I teach my patients how to take ownership of their bodies. We focus on strength, mobility, and confidence, not dependency. Whether it’s someone trying to run pain-free again, lift without fear of back pain, or simply keep up with their kids, we dig deep into their “why.” Because pain isn’t just a physical problem, it affects how you live, how you connect, and how you show up every day.

Today, I’m proud to say I’ve opened my own business, operating out of a locally owned gym in South Pasadena. It’s a space where I can give each person the time, attention, and a plan they truly deserve. I work with runners, lifters, racket-sport athletes, and everyday people who simply want to feel strong, capable, and pain-free again.

At the end of the day, my goal is simple, to help people move better, perform better, and live better. Every person who walks through my doors has a story, and I’m just grateful to be part of helping them write a stronger, healthier next chapter.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were numerous hurdles. Chiropractic school teaches you how to be a chiropractor: how to diagnose, identify red flags, and help patients feel better. But the path I chose was very different. School didn’t teach me how to get someone back to a “performance-ready” level, how to truly bridge the gap between rehab and strength training. That part, I had to figure out on my own.

Because of that, I invested heavily in myself , finding mentors, taking specialized courses, and diving into continuing education. Many of these opportunities weren’t local, which meant extra costs for travel, flights, and hotels. As a full-time graduate student, that was tough. But I knew that if I wanted to be exceptional at what I do, I couldn’t rely only on what school provided.

After graduating, another challenge came up, communicating this approach to patients. Over 90% of chiropractors still operate in a quick-appointment, high-volume style, focused mainly on adjustments. So when people first meet me, they sometimes wonder why my sessions are 60 minutes long or why my fees are higher than the typical chiropractor down the street. The difference is simple: at Hybrid Rx, we don’t do quick fixes, we build long-term solutions.

And honestly, opening my own business right after graduation was one of the most intimidating decisions I’ve ever made. I believed in my ability to provide great care, but I had to ask myself, was I willing to bet on myself? The answer was yes.
Those first two years were a grind: 40 to 60 hours a week, learning, building, and marketing. But it was worth every second. I can now treat patients the way I know is most effective, without compromise. I’m proud to say I’ve built something that reflects my values: individualized care, real results, and a place where people can feel seen, heard, and truly helped.

As you know, we’re big fans of Hybrid Rx Rehab, Chiropractic & Performance. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The name Hybrid Rx comes from the idea of prescribing a blend — combining my background in movement rehab, chiropractic care, and performance coaching to deliver the best outcomes for every patient.

Our healthcare system often separates professions into silos: chiropractors treat the spine, physical therapists handle rehab, and trainers focus on fitness. But the human body doesn’t work in parts, it works as a system. Pain is rarely isolated to one area; it’s often multi-factorial. At Hybrid Rx, we bridge those gaps. We take a systems-based approach, assessing how the entire body moves, compensates, and adapts. This allows us to not only get people out of pain but to help them move and perform at their highest potential.

Over the last 15 years, I’ve dedicated my career to understanding the body from every angle , through movement, biomechanics, and performance. That’s what makes Hybrid Rx different. We merge the precision of chiropractic care, the depth of rehab, and the intensity of strength and conditioning into one seamless experience.

We treat much more than just back or neck pain. We see the full spectrum: foot, ankle, knee, hip, shoulder, wrist, you name it. Many of our patients are runners, lifters, and active adults who want to stay strong, pain-free, and performing at their best. Because we’re located inside a boutique gym, we can bridge that crucial gap between rehab and real-world performance, helping patients transition from the treatment table back to the activities they love.

Transparency is also a core part of our brand. Before committing to care, every patient is offered a complimentary discovery call and visit. It’s an opportunity to understand their story, medical history, goals, and ensure we’re the right fit. We’re honest about our pricing, services, and expectations, because our goal is to build trust and deliver lasting results, not temporary relief.

Beyond one-on-one care, Hybrid Rx is about community. We regularly host group hikes, community runs, and beginner-friendly workouts to encourage people to move, connect, and learn that movement truly is medicine. We want to create a space where people of all backgrounds and fitness levels feel empowered, not limited by their pain or past injuries.

What I’m most proud of, brand-wise, is the culture we’ve built. Hybrid Rx represents empowerment, education, and long-term health. We don’t just help people recover; we help them rediscover what their bodies are capable of, and give them the confidence to keep pushing forward.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Growing up in a struggling household, my parents couldn’t afford to enroll me in sports. I was never the athletic kid, I lacked stamina, coordination, and confidence. Food became my comfort, and before I knew it, I had built an unhealthy lifestyle that followed me into young adulthood.

Everything changed when I saw my parents and extended family struggle with their health. Many battled chronic illnesses, in and out of hospitals, and some passed far too soon, in their early 60s. Watching that unfold was a wake-up call. I realized I didn’t want to continue that cycle.

At 20, I made the decision to completely turn my life around. I chose kinesiology as my college major, driven by a mission to understand the human body, not just for myself, but so I could help others reclaim their health too. My goal was simple: to move, feel, and live better now, and still be strong and capable when I’m 60. That decision became the foundation of who I am today and why I do what I do.
