Community Highlights: Meet Donovan Moser of We’re Important Now (WIN)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donovan Moser.

Hi Donovan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I actually started out coaching as a volunteer for my son’s team. Long story short, they needed someone to step in, and I took on the role. Before each practice, we’d get to the gym early to work out. After a while, a few of his teammates—and even kids from other teams in the league—started showing up early to join us. Every week, more players wanted to come ready. It became a lot to manage, but I didn’t want to turn away a young athlete who was eager to learn. So I decided to host and organize a free camp at the YMCA where we played our games. That’s really when things started to take off.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been the smoothest road. With coaching, you run into so many obstacles you don’t see coming. One of the biggest challenges I mentioned earlier was not always having access to gym time—facilities were often packed, and there were times we couldn’t even hold practice indoors. Instead of canceling, I’d tell the kids to meet me at a nearby park for a field workout. Everyone looked forward to those sessions, parents included.
Another challenge, which everyone faced, was the pandemic. For me, it wasn’t just about everything coming to a pause—it was about the aftereffects on the kids. I saw so many athletes lose motivation, and it was tough getting them back into shape. Luckily, the families I worked with stayed connected and kept asking how they could keep their kids active. That pushed me to start creating home workout videos on YouTube. At first, it felt completely foreign—doing everything online, over Zoom, or just through a call—but the need was there. I had to figure it out, adapt, and get comfortable with it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I’m a children’s book author, basketball trainer, and coach who specializes in youth skill development, mentorship, and life skills. I’m known for bringing high energy, a stern-but-positive approach, and the ability to truly connect with my athletes. What sets me apart is my patience. Developing athletes at a high level isn’t easy, but patience has always been my greatest strength.
What I’m most proud of is seeing my student-athletes keep that fire to compete—not just through high school, but into the collegiate ranks as well. I want the readers to know, even if we’ve never met, I want you to know: I’m rooting for you, and I want to see you WIN. Pay it forward.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is that it’s not about where you start—it’s about how you finish. I began small, but I set big goals once I realized I wanted to do this full-time. There were moments when I doubted if I could keep going, especially with the obstacles that came my way. Honestly, I never imagined I’d accomplish some of the things I have so far. But through hard work and persistence, I’ve been able to provide a service at an elite level.
What’s carried me is the same message I share with my athletes: work hard, even when you don’t feel 100%. That mindset has gotten me here. I’ve also learned that being flexible and open-minded makes it a lot easier to push through tough times and come out stronger on the other side.
