Community Highlights: Meet Denis Fasquelle of theCoderSchool Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denis Fasquelle.

Hi Denis, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Welcome to our school, welcome to your community! We hope you will think of this as your second home — a place to learn and have fun in a caring and supportive environment! We are Nicole Chang and Denis Fasquelle, wife-husband co-owner team. We are so excited to bring theCoderSchool to the Los Angeles area! A little about us – we come from a family of educators. Nicole grew up in New Haven, CT where her father was a Professor at Yale, and Mom an educator for the talented and gifted. Denis hails from Paris, France where his mother taught music at the National Conservatory of Lyon. We have lived abroad much of our lives in Europe and Asia where we were senior business executives and entrepreneurs in the finance, retail, hospitality, and media industries. As parents, we believe in the importance of equipping today’s youth (and yesterday’s youth – we teach adults too!) with the tools they need not only for their personal success and careers, but to change the world and make it a better place for the generations to come. Success involves developing a creative mindset, the ability to think critically, and having confidence — what we call the 3C’s. We believe in theCoderSchool philosophy of teaching to code through a personalized entrepreneurial approach, learning in a fun and supportive environment, encouraging self-expression, and fostering a family-oriented community. We hope you will join our community and we look forward to working with you and your children to create an amazing learning environment.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Our school in Pasadena opened officially on March 7, 2020. A week later, we had to close the doors due to the pandemic. We had to shift of teaching model from in-person to an online model, for the next 2 years. Establishing an educational model purely online was very challenging to say the most, but we did it and survived! Nowadays, we teach 80% of our classes in person at the school, and still offering online classes, as a convenience to some of our students.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At theCoderSchool Pasadena, we provide a supportive learning environment where students ages 7–18 develop strong computational thinking and problem-solving skills through coding. Our personalized, project-based approach helps students master real programming languages such as Scratch, Python, Java, Lua , C#, and C++ while learning key concepts in logic, algorithms, and design. By blending creativity with critical thinking, we prepare students to understand not just how to code, but how to think like coders—analytical, innovative, and ready for the challenges of tomorrow.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
