Community Highlights: Meet Claudia Santa Cruz of Santa Cruz Communications

Today we’d like to introduce you to Claudia Santa Cruz.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After working for ten years practicing Public Relations in the corporate world, specifically in Univision Los Angeles, Telemundo Los Angeles, and then Telemundo network in Miami, I opened my own agency in 2001. That decade was critical in providing me with the expertise and the connections from which to build my new firm, which focuses on delivering communications solutions for companies seeking to engage with the U.S. Latino market. Twenty-two years later, Santa Cruz Communications, Inc. continues to thrive, working with clients such as No Kid Hungry, a national campaign of Share Our Strength, an organization committed to ending hunger and poverty in the U.S., Spanish-language television network Telemundo (agency of record for the company’s award shows), and Adsmovil, the #1 Digital Hispanic Audience Reach company.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being an entrepreneur means that there will be a lot of sacrifices made along the way, including long working hours, working weekends, a high amount of stress and growing pains. In addition, sometimes we have to work through difficult times, and one example was during Covid. During that period, we found our clients canceling or postponing events and work cooled off. To overcome these challenges, it was important that we stayed focused. We needed to look beyond our usual scope of work and be flexible and open-minded to seek other opportunities that would keep the agency afloat. The worst thing anyone can do during these types of situations is to stay put. When something is not working, it is critical to pivot and adapt.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
With 22 years in the market, we are a leading woman-owned, minority-owned, independent communications firm driven to deliver solutions for companies seeking to reach the U.S. Latino market. We boast a passionate team of highly experienced and creative bilingual and bicultural professionals based in Miami and L.A., spanning across time zones to cover all major U.S. markets. I believe that strategy and creativity is our strength. We develop and implement integrated programs that impact clients’ business goals and deliver ROI with cutting-edge media relations, community and corporate relations, social media campaigns, and special events.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
It’s not enough to do your work with great professionalism; it’s critical to also demonstrate character and integrity in everything you do. The first one opens up doors, but the latter builds lasting relationships.
