Community Highlights: Meet Chris Lilly of Flow Your Mojo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Lilly

Hi Chris, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story as a writer and a tarot reader for writer’s block begins back when I was about 5 years old. I remember turning on Bedknobs and Broomsticks and pretending to be Miss Price, casting spells and flying over the city — which resulted in me breaking a broomstick in half and not telling my parents.

I’ve always been interested in witches and magic, however growing up in a highly conservative Mormon/LDS household, I was not allowed to explore any of that stuff — or be gay, but that’s a a different story.

Fast forward to my tween/teen years where I highly enjoyed Power Rangers, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, and Charmed and being obsessed with building a collection of VHS tapes with these episodes on them.

I graduated from college in 2006; literally walked at my graduation, stripped off my robe, and drove to LA with less than $1000 in my pocket or an apartment set up. I knew I belonged in LA, I just hand no idea what I was going to do when I got there.

It wasn’t until 2009 when I was watching the series finale of Charmed with some friends when I realized that I was a writer. They were complaining about about bad one of the sisters looked. My response was, “This is the last story you’re ever going to see of these sisters! Why are you concerned about how one of them looks?” That summer I enrolled in the UCLA Extension Program. (I didn’t know about the comic books at the time.)

I graduated from the UCLA Extension Program in 2011 where I developed a YouTube web series called Just Us Guys, about a gay dad who was best friends with his straight teenage son. It was greatly inspired by Gilmore Girls and my own life as a gay man. Producing Just Us Guys was essentially my own version of film school.. Some episodes were presented at San Diego Comic-Con and then a spinoff, Elsie, was presented at Salt Lake City Comic-Con. The series came to end due to circumstances beyond my control in 2015.

After that, I floundered. Wrote a few things here and there, but got lost. Then 2020 hit. A lot of people online were saying, “If you don’t come out of this with a new skill, you’ve wasted your time.” That was so unhelpful. Such much extra stressed placed on people during an already stressful time. Then I saw another post that said, “If you’ve been working hard, now is your chance to take a break.” So I did that option.

I went back to my roots and started listening to a podcast called Writing Excuses, where one of the podcast hosts said that when she has writer’s block, she pulls out her tarot cards, and I went ALL in. Five years later, I have over 70 decks, am a certified Biddy Tarot Advisor, and have a small business called Flow Your Mojo.

Flow Your Mojo has taken up a lot of my time, however, I’ve made great strides in preparing to self publish some short stories — One is called “Duncan, a Gay Teenage Witch” and the other is “Witch Games.” It’s been almost 10 years since I’ve released any of my own writing/content, so I’m pumped for it.

And it all started with pretending to be Miss Price about 35 years ago.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Everywhere I turned was a struggle. Whether it was some family members telling me that I need to have a ”more stable job,” not having the funds to attend certain events, figuring out where I belong tin the LGBTQ community, releasing limiting beliefs that aren’t mine that I still struggle to let go of, the most recent SAG and WGA strikes… the list goes on and on. Sometimes it almost feels like I just can’t get a break.

Working in the entertainment industry and leaving a 9-5 position was and still is a whirlwind of emotions that I still struggle with. But the struggles balance out with the awesome experiences of being on set, mid afternoon naps, projects being presented at Comic-Cons, and having the opportunity to relax when it’s truly needed.

I didn’t grow up with money, so I’ve had to discover all of this on my own, with chosen team members, or course—shout out to Mark, Tyler, Annalisa, and Erica. Even I still struggle to see how far I’ve grown as a human during all of this, but I know I’m in a lot better of space now than I would be if I didn’t follow my heart, intuition, and magic.

My tarot practice has helped ground me sooo much and I’m so glad that I found it… or did it find me?

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My expertise helps screenwriters and authors complete 3-8 projects a year using tarot cards. I believe that when writers use the images of tarot cards to write a project, they themselves can get so immersed into creating rich and exciting worlds that readers won’t be able to stop turning pages.

Every writer has a folder on their computer with stories in it titled “I’ll get to one day” and that’s what I’d like also to help writers clear out. By getting more in tune with their intuition, writers will be able to build a bigger portfolio, release more stories, and get paid for their art, if they choose to go that route.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I don’t consider myself a risk taker, though, I did drive out to Los Angeles with less than $1000 in my pocket, so I guess I do take risks every now and again. For your readers, I would like to add this tidbit: This is your life. Nobody else is going to live it for you. Follow your intuition and do what makes you happy. You have my permission to go be delusional — but you are responsible for your own actions and decisions. Leave me out of it, haha.

I’d like to add something else that might flip your question a little…

There’s no such thing as failure. Whenever you or someone tries something and things don’t work out for whatever reason — a launch, a dance, going to college for eight years to drop out at the last semester because you realize you’re/going to be miserable — you/they didn’t fail. You/They learned something and got data on how they can possibly do it better next time or understand that the “thing” was just not for them and they can move on to the next “launch” or whatever with more success. You’re not starting over from scratch, your starting over with experience.
