Charles Hamwi is the founder and principal designer of Home Style Designs, bringing more than four decades of experience across flooring, remodeling, and residential design. His professional journey reflects a deliberate evolution—from high-volume operations to fully integrated, design-led home renovations.
Charles graduated in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art, specializing in Television and Motion Picture Production from Columbia College. His academic background sharpened his eye for composition, balance, and visual storytelling—principles that later became fundamental to his approach to residential design. Understanding how people experience space, flow, and proportion has remained a defining strength throughout his career.
Before establishing Home Style Designs, Charles spent more than 30 years building and operating a successful flooring business with five locations throughout San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. That operation was intentionally volume-driven, serving a broad and diverse client base. While the model did not include full design services, Charles consistently guided clients in selecting flooring colors and materials that aligned with their furniture, lifestyle, and personal preferences. This hands-on exposure to thousands of homes provided deep insight into materials, durability, and real-world living needs.
As homeowner expectations shifted toward more cohesive and personalized renovations, Charles identified the opportunity to unify design and construction under one accountable structure. He transitioned from volume-based flooring operations into full-scope home renovation and design, focusing on kitchens, bathrooms, and flooring as an integrated package rather than separate trades.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We made a conscious decision to prioritize quality over volume. If a project exceeds our capacity to deliver the level of craftsmanship and on-time performance we commit to, we turn it down. Maintaining quality standards and meeting target completion dates on every project is non-negotiable for us, and that discipline has been central to our long-term success.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We transitioned from a flooring-only, volume-driven operation to a quality-driven kitchen and bath remodeling practice. Our focus is on craftsmanship, daily on-site inspections, and direct client involvement. I personally visit each project during execution to ensure quality standards are met, timelines are protected, and the client remains fully integrated throughout the process.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Many people are surprised to learn that I maintain an active creative life outside of construction. I draw, sculpt, and play music by ear, without reading notes. I am also an avid cook, and on several occasions after completing a kitchen remodel, I have personally prepared dinner in the finished space. The idea is to celebrate the kitchen in use, allowing guests to experience the space naturally and remember our work should they ever consider a renovation of their own. The invitations are initiated by the client, who hosts friends and neighbors in their home.
