Community Highlights: Meet Chad Levin of The Rich Beard Barber

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chad Levin.

Hi Chad, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started cutting hair when I was 15 years old. I grew up the 4th oldest of 13 siblings; I have 7 brothers and 5 sisters. So money was pretty tight growing up. I always enjoyed working and making money at a young age. My mom would give us haircuts and chase us around the house trying to cut our hair, and they were bad haircuts lol I had my own money, so I would go to the local barbershops and I loved the process of going in looking horrible and coming out looking like a million bucks! That’s when I had the idea I should learn how to cut. I felt horrible for my brothers, so I made a deal with my mom: you buy the clippers to cut, and I’ll learn how to cut my brothers’ hair, so they won’t complain, and you don’t have to chase them around the house. That was an easy deal to close. Out of all my brothers, only one of them would allow me to cut his hair in the beginning, which is crazy because the alternative option was not any better.
Fast forward a few years, and I was still cutting my brothers and friends for free because I truly loved the craft. I became a firefighter/EMT, and I did this for 4 years in Illinois, where I grew up. I remember making the offer to a fellow fireman on duty. I said, ” I can give you a better haircut than what you currently have.” He thought I was joking until the following shift, I brought my clippers in and gave him a cut. That was the beginning of Firehouse Cuts, lol, that’s what we called it at our station. I ended up cutting all the guys’ hair while we were on duty. If we got a call mid-cut, they would just throw a hat on and run out of the station. Good times.
I decided to move to California for many reasons, but one that we can all agree on was the weather. I couldn’t stand the cold anymore. I honed in on my craft as a barber back in Illinois, and really found that I love working on beards and I was finally able to start growing a good beard. When I was a fireman, we had to be clean-shaven every shift, so that if we got a house fire, our SCBAs would get a proper suction to our faces.
It’s safe to say it took me a little over two years to perfect my own beard. So when I moved to California, I knew beards were gonna be my niche, because they are a very hard craft to master and for the most part many barbers do not know how to properly groom them since they do not have a beard themselves.

I’ve been in Newport Beach, California now for almost four years. I’m still enjoying my craft like the day I first picked up the clippers. It’s safe to say now that I’m the known beard barber in OC, I’ve started my own product line for men’s Hair, Beard, and Skin, called The Rich Beard. It’s my goal to scale this brand up across the nation. I’ve gotten nothing but positive feedback on the skin care since I launched in 2022. We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There’s been plenty of struggles; The hardest struggle was moving across the country, restarting from zero in a new city, that is super expensive to live in, where I knew no one. Growing that into a business, having no friends or family here, definitely was one of the hardest things I had to do.

What I would like readers to know about me and my brand Is that I am the best barber and beard barber in all of Southern California. If you are looking for the best haircut, beard trim, beard line-up, or straight shave I’m the guy you come to. I can do any haircut from a fade to a scissor cut. I would like readers to know that a haircut and beard shaping is so much more than just going to a simple hole-in-the-wall place to knock it off the to-do list. Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy is making my clients happy with the results I provide. First-time clients have come in almost defeated from trying and trying to find someone that can give them the haircut and beard trim they’ve been looking for, sometimes even believing that it’s just the way their hair grows. It makes me really happy when I can prove that their belief from bad experiences is wrong, and also pairing their haircut with my beard skin and hair products that they love and keep coming back for!
