Today we’d like to introduce you to Benedikt Sebastian
Hi Benedikt, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always been a storyteller, and that passion has taken me across multiple creative disciplines—acting, writing, music, photography, and filmmaking. I was born in Nelspruit, South Africa, and grew up in a rural, agricultural environment that shaped my imagination. My multicultural, multilingual upbringing gave me a deep appreciation for complex characters and nuanced storytelling.
After earning a Bachelor’s in Visual Communication and a Master’s in Creative Writing, I built a career that blended visual and narrative arts. I moved to Los Angeles to further pursue acting, and just as momentum was building, the pandemic hit, halting productions. During that time, I shifted focus to photography, videography, graphic design, and creative writing—skills that have since become an integral part of my career. The subsequent industry strikes further cemented my transition into working behind the camera, something I’ve embraced as much as my on-screen work.
As an actor, I gravitate toward complex, morally ambiguous roles—the anti-hero, the antagonist, the miserable fish out of water. My work includes America: Promised Land, Battle Star Wars, Blood and Glory, Eye Without a Face, The Unsettling, Toxic Impulses, and most recently, The Naughty List of Mr. Scrooge, in which I play Marty. The film follows a group of former college friends who reunite at a winter chalet a decade after a tragic incident during a production of A Christmas Carol, only to be stalked by a mysterious figure dressed as a terrifying Ebenezer Scrooge.
Between my experience in improv at UCB, my passion for visually-driven storytelling, and my ability to step into darker, layered roles, I bring a distinct energy to every project I take on. Whether in front of the camera or behind it, my work is about capturing depth, tension, and raw human emotion.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely been anything but a smooth road. The creative industry—whether in acting, writing, or filmmaking—is built on uncertainty, and navigating that has been one of the biggest challenges. Rejection is a constant, and there’s no clear-cut path to success. You have to be resilient, adaptable, and willing to push forward even when things feel stagnant.
Moving to Los Angeles was a major step in my career, and just as things were gaining momentum, the pandemic shut everything down. Productions stopped, opportunities dried up, and like many artists, I had to pivot. I shifted my focus to photography, videography, graphic design, and creative writing—skills I had always used but now leaned into even more.
Then came the strikes—the Writers Guild, SAG-AFTRA, and crew unions fighting for fair wages, better contracts, and protections in an evolving industry. While absolutely necessary, they also slowed work down again. But in a way, it solidified my transition into working behind the camera, something I’ve come to love just as much as performing.
Beyond the external challenges, one of the biggest struggles is managing time and energy across multiple creative pursuits. I’m involved in acting, music, writing, photography, and filmmaking, and balancing all those passions while maintaining momentum in each is no small task. But ultimately, the challenges have shaped me. They’ve forced me to evolve, to diversify, and to approach storytelling from multiple angles. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the ability to adapt is just as important as talent.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Mid-City Films?

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Absolutely. My journey wouldn’t be what it is without the people who have supported me along the way.
My family has been a constant source of encouragement, even from across the world. Pursuing a creative career isn’t always the most conventional path, but they’ve always backed me, believing in my vision and resilience. That kind of foundation gives you the confidence to keep pushing forward, no matter the obstacles.
My friends—both in South Africa and here in LA—are like my extended family. They root for me, challenge me, and keep me grounded through all the ups and downs. Having that kind of unwavering support in an industry that can be unpredictable is invaluable.
My agents and managers have also played a crucial role. They’ve looked out for me, helped me navigate opportunities, and made sure I’m in the right rooms with the right people. Their belief in my potential has helped shape my career in ways I’m incredibly grateful for.
Then there are my filmmaking friends—the directors, writers, producers, and cinematographers who trust me, bring me onto projects when I’m the right fit, or recommend me to others. This industry is built on collaboration, and I’m lucky to have people around me who believe in what I bring to the table.
Every project is different, and every experience introduces me to new people who shape my journey. It’s never just one person or one moment—it’s a collective effort, and I wouldn’t be where I am without that.
