Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Calle.
Hi Alex, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Certainly! My journey began with a deep appreciation for the aviation industry, inspired by a family member who works as a flight attendant. Over the years, I had numerous conversations with aviation professionals—pilots, attendants, ramp agents, and other airline commuters—who shared their challenges and the need for a better crash pad experience. The turning point came when a friend faced repeated dangerous situations in an unsafe area at her crash pad in Philadelphia. Realizing the pressing need for a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment, I founded The Layover Club (tlc). Inspired by Japanese capsule hotels and driven by a commitment to community and safety, I aimed to create a place where aviation professionals could feel at home, recharge, and thrive.
tlc is located in a safe and convenient area, our facilities offer an array of perks to ensure comfort and convenience:

Please select one of the questions from below and tell us more about your professional life and career.
I come from 2 decades of experience in designing and developing a wide variety of genres; film, TV, theatre, theme parks, attractions, casinos, and public art around the world. It’s through this work that I am afforded the opportunity to identify and appreciate many different types of stories and cultures and the tlc story has become a passion story to tell. With tlc, we are able to build a better layover life for those airline professionals that work tirelessly, day in and day out, to get us where we need to be, 365 days a year. I hope tlc can be a part of their story moving forward.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was finding and addressing the right target group. Our niche market—commuting aviation professionals based in LAX, particularly those in the early years of their careers—required a precise approach. Identifying their specific needs and reaching them effectively was initially difficult. Additionally, overcoming the negative perceptions associated with traditional crash pads was another major hurdle. Many aviation professionals had experienced cramped, unsafe, and unwelcoming environments, so redefining this concept was crucial.
However, through persistence, listening to our members, and continuously improving based on their feedback, we managed to create a safe, stylish, and supportive environment. Our success is a testament to the importance of understanding and addressing the unique needs of our community.
We’ve been impressed with the layover club, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Over the next 5-10 years, I see significant shifts in the aviation and hospitality industries. This includes better living conditions, more flexible schedules, and enhanced support systems.
Technological Advancements: Technology will play a crucial role in improving the efficiency and convenience of layover accommodations. From app-based bookings to smart room features, the integration of technology will enhance the overall experience.
Sustainability: Eco-friendly practices will become more prominent, with a focus on sustainable materials, energy-efficient facilities, and waste reduction.
Community Building: The importance of community and support networks will grow, leading to more initiatives aimed at fostering connections among aviation professionals.
Customization and Personalization: There will be a trend towards offering personalized experiences, tailored to the specific needs and preferences of individuals. This could range from customizable room settings to personalized meal plans.
As for our goals, within the next 1.5 years, we aim to have our first large facility up and running in Downtown Inglewood, just minutes from LAX. From there, we plan to expand to other major hubs within the next 3-5 years. With a strong community and network, even expansion overseas is on our horizon. We strive to create a consistent, high-standard experience for our members, just like ordering your favorite coffee at a nationwide chain or enjoying the famous animal-style burgers and fries—you know exactly what to expect, and we will deliver the same high standards every ti
