Check Out Shane Wynn’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shane Wynn.

Hi Shane, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am an artist and photojournalist based in Akron, Oh. My work focuses on prevalent social issues and telling the ‘other stories’ of overlooked people in my the community. During COVID, my videographer husband and I set out on a nine months road trip to document the US during the time of COVID with our children while they are remote learning.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There are many difficulties associated with our road trip. We are traveling across the US by travel trailer. It is 21 feet in length and there were five of us occupying that space during the first leg of our journey including two children, my mother in law, my husband and me. We have found new coping mechanisms to co-exist in a tiny space. We also had financial hurdles in preparing for our trip, including renting out our home for nine months (cats included), securing loans and creating a successful Patreon Campaign to help offset the costs associated with traveling.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in portrait photography that conveys emotions and celebrates overlooked people in my community. I am known for my public art installations in Akron, Oh. I have produced three large scales, outdoor portrait installations celebrating different subjects such as women, refugees/immigrants and minorities. Additionally, I created a series entitled “TransAkron,” which highlights stories of people in our local Transgender community. I have been a photojournalist for 26 years as well. I love when the worlds of art and journalism collide and I am able to communicate across both platforms.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
It may be wise to separate art from income. Diversify how you make money and try to leave it independent from influencing your artistic decisions.
