Check Out Yuhanxiao (maggie) Ma’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yuhanxiao (maggie) Ma

Yuhanxiao (Maggie), we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey as an artist and creative technologist has always centered on the intersection of art, science, and technology. At New York University, I concentrated on Media, Arts, and Technology while also engaging deeply with philosophy. This experience significantly shaped my understanding of Western thought, our notions of modernity, and the ways technology impacts society. This interdisciplinary approach has allowed me to explore the critical intersections of these fields and their relevance in contemporary discourse.

My projects often interrogate specific aspects of technology, such as pharmaceuticals as a form of technological advancement, where I examine their societal implications and ethical considerations. I interrogated the inflated trust we place in pharmaceuticals as the ultimate solution to our problems in my project “Modest Witnesses.” Additionally, I engage in more abstract and speculative projects, like “Leonia,” which invites viewers to contemplate the blurred boundaries between life and artificiality, envisioning a humanity that exists in a different form. Through these works, I encourage critical reflections on our technological landscape and the legacies we create, bridging the gap between concrete issues and imaginative inquiries. This dual approach enriches my artistic practice and promotes discourse on the complex relationships between humanity and technology.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Navigating the art world as an emerging artist presents its challenges, particularly at the intersection of art and technology. The rapid evolution of technological tools demands significant time and effort to stay current, which can occasionally detract from the creative process. This constant learning curve can feel overwhelming, as I strive to incorporate new tools while maintaining my artistic vision.

However, these challenges also present unique opportunities for growth and innovation. Embracing the difficulties of technological advancement inspires me to continually expand my artistic expression and explore new concepts and techniques. Ultimately, while the demands of staying current can be challenging, they play a crucial role in shaping my artistic development and empowering me to push the boundaries of my creativity.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
While technology is constantly evolving, leading to discoveries that can often prove previous beliefs false, I find it essential to challenge the perception of science as an infallible source of credibility and objectivity. In my work, I intentionally present imaginary or manipulated information in the form of scientific visual language, provoking critical discussions about scientific claims. This approach not only highlights the inherent uncertainties within scientific discourse but also reflects the complexities of our current information landscape, where narratives can shift rapidly. By blending fact with fiction, I encourage viewers to interrogate the very foundations of what we consider truth, fostering a deeper understanding of the dynamic relationship between knowledge and belief in our technologically driven world.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can collaborate or support my work in several meaningful ways. I’m always open to partnerships that explore the intersection of art, science, and technology. This could involve co-creating research-based practices, and multimedia installations.

Additionally, support can come through sharing my work and ideas within your networks, helping to amplify discussions about the themes I explore, such as the socio-political implications of technology and the nature of authenticity in our post-truth era.

If you’re interested in collaborating or discussing potential opportunities, feel free to reach out! I’m always excited to connect with individuals and organizations that share a passion for innovative artistic practices.
