Check Out Xu Han’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Xu Han.

Xu, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a New Media Artist. I made a performance in 2019 using my own tears. The work is called Five Facts About Tears, which is a video of an art performance with five series of speculative wearable installations connecting my real tears. I would like to explore the symbolic and hidden meaning behind “tears” and present them through objects in order to pursue the beauty of poetry.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was hard to record myself crying. I kept watching for something that really makes me feel pain in deep of my heart. Watch again and again. It is like a punishment that I am not allowing myself to get over with it for a period of time.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Tears can be cooled. I use a fan to dry out my tears. Tears can be eaten. I eat tears.

Tears can be fake. I fake tears.

Tears can influence vision. When tears cover my eyes, what could I see?

Tears finally can be a life song.

In the last piece, I create a tears sensor. The material on my face is the conductive tape that links with the speaker in my mouth. When I cry, the circuit completes. So the speaker will play the sound of an infant crying.
