Today we’d like to introduce you to Vana Tha Slayer
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Born in Queens, New York, I moved out to LA in 2007 and grew up here. I went to high school at Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnets grew up around various notable artist. After graduating high school and lunch battle raps I got accepted at UCLA where I officially got into the music industry. In 2017 as a duo act with Coleman Bryant (okay coleman!) debut a two song ep in September 14, 2018 titled Kyoto under the name Voodoo Tha Priest. After a couple singles and the pandemic it was time for me to rebrand myself thus becoming Vana Tha Slayer. During the pandemic, i started working as a mix engineer and producer at Ice Cream Studios and feel in love with the art of production. However my time there was short and I began working at Hotel 228 Records. Since then I have been managing the studio, dropping singles, and performing. The most notable places I’ve performed are Saint Rocke, The Moroccan Lounge, Emo nite at the echoplex. However, I have also performed in cities like New York, San Francisco, and Japan. I am still building my reputation as an artist however I have been blessed to work with high level artist in my professional life and in my creative life. I recorded singles with Krista Marina, Mohit, jherz, and Daniel From Yesterday, Oscar Ostrovski, and many other notable artists. I have also tracked and mixed vocals for Compton Menace, Tokyo’s Revenge, and so on. Currently I am dropping second 9-track mixtape titled Scars From A Succubus on February 14, 2025. The members of Tha SlayerCorps are excited for the project and I am excited to give them something to look forward to. I have been in the music industry for about 8 years and i believe this Mixtape is a cultivation of my story and musical journey.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No journey to the top is smooth in my opinion. From heartbreak to financial disparities my life has been far from easy. I have lost lovers and friends that were meant to change the course of my musical life multiple times. During the pandemic I lost a very good friend of my by a hit and run incident and it was devastating to me. Since then I turned to music as my chronicle in a sense to snap shot the way I feel. I have been broke and broken more times than count and I still have managed to do amazing things with the time I have been given thanks to God’s grace.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a bedroom producer, studio mixing engineer, singer/songwriter. I also act as a pseudo manager for Hotel 228 records when the boss is runs his studio in New York. I am most proud of the vibe that I am able to construct by my lonesome in times of great pain. I find it amazing that I have learned a lot about my skills through the talents of my peers. For example, I am currently learning how to Dj however it would be possible if I did not have talented friends like Mr. Pryce, Dj Iverson, or okay coleman helping with my training. What sets me apart is my thirst for musical knowledge. I have always wanted to be a master of music in all its forms. I am no where near that but I have my whole life to try.
What does success mean to you?
Success to me is doing what you love, doing it well, and getting paid for it through people’s appreciation and money.
