Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Rudick.
Hi Susan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Once there was a little curly headed girl who dreamt of being on stage…..I caught the acting and singing bug early while getting a standing ovation belting out Chim Chimney at my elementary school talent show. And look out world! That was it for me!
Years later I had done lots of theater, commercials and voice-overs in both NY and LA.
Like so many actors, waiting for auditions and opportunity is the hardest part. I decided enough of the waiting! Time to do my own thing and take control of the narrative. I met the amazing Tina Vonn in an acting class. We were fans of each other’s work and decided to develop something of our own. That’s when we created BAD ALICE.
BAD ALICE is a dark comedy thriller pilot about an everyday woman (me!) who falls into the dark underbelly of scammers while trying to conceal her own tangled secrets. BAD ALICE is having great success in the film festival circuit this year. We’ve screened at: LA SHORTS INT’L FILM FESTIVAL, MONTREAL INDEPENDENT FILM FESTIVAL, SAN FRANCISCO INDEPENDENT FILM AWARDS (where I won Best Actress) and AUSTIN COMEDY FILM FESTIVAL (we won Best Dark Comedy Series Episode). We also just got into BIG APPLE FILM FESTIVAL and MALIBU FILM FESTIVAL!
In creating BAD ALICE, we knew right away that we wanted a team of strong women artists including director, producers and consultants. We discovered we already have those people in our lives (including the incredible director Fia Perera) so we invited them in. Everyone we asked to help gave us a resounding YES! So, if you’re looking to create your own projects – look to your friends and acting community – you’ll be amazed at the response. And having a team of people support your vision is incredibly powerful.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Smooth? Ha! Ah, no. This business is a long haul. I’ve always known it’s what I wanted to do – that and have kids, so I’ve never given up.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I embrace my authenticity as I adore and admire that in other actors. As you’re working you realize that authenticity is the gold.
I would say I specialize in comedy, although I’m not a stand-up. I’m great with timing and characters, and love the process of finding the characters and playing with other actors. I’m most proud of my growth as an actor, letting go of insecurities and enjoying the work.
I’m grateful for my grit, not letting things stop me, and gathering a community of artists who inspire each other to keep going.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m politically active – deeply committed to my convictions and raising our voices. Your voice matters. Use it.
Fun Fact – I did a commercial with Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld years ago. It was raining. Jerry had an entourage around him holding umbrellas. Bill Gates walked alone umbrella-less. Oh, and the Secret Service was very kind!
