Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Utka.
Hi Stephanie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I learned how to knit and crochet from my nanna. I always watched her hook or needles fly around and make blankets and sweaters. I’m not as good as she was with knitting, but I’ve been practicing. I never thought about selling my things until coworkers complimented my work and asked if they could buy it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Small business is never a smooth road. I’ve recently reopened my Etsy shop but haven’t had new sales on there yet. It’s difficult to do your own advertising and constantly make new products while also juggling a full-time job.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love seeing the faces on people when they see what I can make. My favorite thing is making someone happy or excited with my creations. My chickens are always a huge hit at craft fairs. I’m planning on using that same pattern, with different colors, to make different birds, so stay tuned!
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I am terrible at sewing! I do everything I can to avoid it. If I have to line a bag, I use iron-on fabric bond. With all the measuring and cutting, I’d rather take longer with a tighter stitch than sew in a lining.
