Today we’d like to introduce you to Rochelle Wall.
Hi Rochelle, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
17 years ago, I fell in love with luxury floral design, planning my own wedding, thanks to the likes of Martha Stewart Wedding Magazine.
It was not really common to have lush, organic arrangements of flowers at the time, and the florist I hired did her best to accommodate my tastes within my budget. I was so enamored with the process that I asked if I could come to her studio the night before my wedding to make one of my own centerpieces as a fun experiment. She allowed it, and I fell in love.
When I left my full-time desk job 10 years ago, my intention was to do floral design and pursue my passion for not only focusing on locally grown flowers as often as possible, but attempting to grow my own flowers for my clients. Plans have shifted over time, but I am in a happier place, knowing that I can still rely on locally grown flowers as often as I can to create beautiful and unique floral arrangements for my clients.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
About six years ago, my tiny community outside the city limits of Santa Clarita went into a drought, with water restrictions limiting all outdoor watering of plants. I have mourned the loss of the dream of having a flower farm to fill my orders from, but this is not deterred me.
In the last few years, I have focused instead on planting flowers that I know will survive our extreme heat in the summer and cold wet winters. Daffodils primarily have become a beloved spring crop, and focusing on planting native plants in my yard that bloom flowers has been a healing and rewarding experience.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
A floral designer specializes in the art of floral design. In comparison with a florist shop that fills orders that come in from all different sources with flowers that are flown in from across the world, a floral designer injects their own art, aesthetic, and eye for detail into the designs that they create for their clients. I am so proud to inject my sustainable practices in sourcing local flowers into an industry that normally is not sustainable.
While certain projects cannot be sustainable due to scope, most can be, with a willingness from the client, and an understanding that flexibility and being open to unique touches and gorgeous local and seasonal flowers can be exciting and lend a fresh result in design.
I’m proud of the relationships with flower farmers in my region that I have fostered and researched, and I’m proud to know that my clients appreciate my expertise and perspective while also delivering gorgeous art in the medium of cut flowers.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
While most of my clients can recognize my sustainable efforts, many might not know that I work on a limited and exclusive basis.
Meaning, I only take on one wedding or event per week, so I can personally dedicate my eye and attention to detail to every aspect of the end result. I’ve freelanced for larger companies that have up to 4 events in a weekend, and while the designs might be lovely, they’re not usually up to the standards I would insist on delivering for my own clients.
Additionally, I don’t take on many summertime projects, because I don’t ever want to deliver a wedding that won’t be able to hold up and be beautiful due to summer heat. I’ve had some beautiful designs that I’ve done in very hot conditions and they’ve done well, but it’s always such a stressful situation for all involved, so I’ve chosen to take a step back during the hot months and not take work I cannot be proud of in the long run.
