Check Out River Liu’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to River Liu.

Hi River, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My mother is an architectural designer. Under her influence, I gradually became interested in art. I knew I deeply fell in love with art when I picked up a pencil to draw at six. On the journey of pursuing art, I have explored the aesthetics of design. Design is a challenging art. I innovate in rules and seek laws in innovation. I like things that are challenging, and I like communication and exploration. Therefore, I set the goal of becoming a designer. I studied visual design in China for four years, then came to the United States for further study. In this country full of innovation and opportunities, I accumulated more systematic and commercial design thoughts.

Currently, I am working as the chief designer in a clothing design company in Los Angeles, responsible for brand, graphic, and web design. Every day there are challenges in my work, but my enthusiasm for design has not faded. I insist on constant innovation and exploration to help the brand establish a relationship with the consumer group to help the brand improve its awareness. In addition, to being a designer, I also work as a part-time model. I like painting, learning dance, and watching musicals. My life is closely related to art, which is also my lifelong pursuit.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Fortunately, learning painting from an early age has helped me accumulate a certain amount of aesthetics, and my rich imagination has also enabled me to constantly innovate. However, design is full of challenges. A good Design needs not only aesthetics but also sharp market insight. An excellent design production process is the balance of aesthetic, commercial, and social value. An excellent designer needs to face not only the industry’s challenges but also the challenges of self-cognition.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I began to learn painting when I was six years old. What I was most proud of when I was young was that I participated in the Youth Science Fiction Painting Competition and won the national first prize, which was T the first time in Guangxi Province. My works were included in the Guangxi Art Museum. In addition, I have participated in many illustration projects for teaching textbooks. I won the Silver Award in the Undergraduate Advertising Design Competition and the Honorary Award in the Platinum Creativity Competition. I won the first prize in mascot design in the “No. 1 Store” design competition held by China Unicom and participated in the follow-up mascot research and development. In 2022, I won the platinum award for logo design and a silver award for poster design in the MUSE Creative Awards Competition.

Currently, I am working as a chief designer of a company in Los Angeles, responsible for graphics, brand image, and web design. I led the creative team to redefine the company’s brand image, design a new logo, develop and release a brand website, and successfully establish the relationship between the brand and consumers to help them improve their market awareness. Our brand has not only been recognized by the market but also successfully conducted business cooperation with Macy’s, Nordstrom and Stitch Fix, and other companies. I am confident that I am indeed gifted in art. However, at the same time, I am still working hard to learn and explore, keep my curiosity about new things, use my keen observation to help the works establish market connections, and constantly strive for the integrity of each work. My study and work in China and the United States have given me a broader perspective on things. I am good at combining western thinking with eastern aesthetics. This unique perspective makes my own works different from others.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I have always maintained an open communication state, and I usually have a part-time job as a graphic designer and illustrator. I like to share my creative process or design inspiration with everyone. You can find my email, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Behance on my personal website, where you can also see my works and leave messages to tell me your ideas or comment on my works. If you need business cooperation, email me directly or cooperate with me through Upwork. I also have a small wish to exhibit my painting works. If I have the opportunity to do so, I am very willing to cooperate.
