Today we’d like to introduce you to Nyessia Brooks.
Hi Nyessia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
It all started as a little girl. My mother was a nurse, and I watched her as she got dressed every morning for work. Back in the day, they were all white with a little white hat and white shoes. I used to say to myself she looked like an angel from heaven, because of the all-white she wore. I grew up to follow in her footsteps. I became a nurse in 1999. I’ve been nursing for almost 24 years. I worked in various fields of nursing. I worked in nursing homes, home health care, psychiatric wards, wound care, med surg, and private duty… I’ve been around when it comes to nursing, But the one thing that stood out to me is none of the scrubs I wore was comfortable, stylish, or flexible. So about seven years ago. I dreamed about having my own scrub line… I wanted to come up with something where we could be comfortable and stylish at the same time… Been comfortable at work when performing your call of duty is a must. You must have good stretch and protection from contamination. Being comfortable and looking good at work is my goal. We spend the majority of our time at work doing 8 to 12 hours, sometimes even 16 hours a day, overtime… I was so inspired to be a nurse. We see everything. We are like an angel. We see you at your worst and when you get better. Sometimes we are there when you take your last breath..Nurses are a work of heart, and I love what I do.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some of my struggles was thinking I will never be able to do this. How can I pull this off? I don’t have the proper funding. I don’t have the connections. I would never be able to do this. No one will buy from me… It took me seven years to get my business up and running. I funded my own project it took a while, but you can do it as long as you keep going and don’t stop… It’s possible. The devil was always busy talking to me. But I knew God was on my side. This was my vision; he gave me this vision, and he would not let me down. Praying got me thru this, and I believe in myself.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a licensed nurse. I work for the Veterans Affairs, VA hospital. I am able to experience veterans that have been in the war for our country. I respect them highly. I also work in rehab and hospice also we do wound care, pass medications and narcotics. I am known for putting a smile on my patient’s face, always saying a kind word. And always caring about the well-being of my patients and their families as well. I am most proud of myself because I know I make a difference in someone’s life. Even a touch or a smile can change someone’s life. What sets me apart from others is that my heart is genuine. Sometimes I take things to heart. I look at every patient as my family member or if it was somebody in my family and say that’s the type of care I would want them to have. Someone who cares and gives the best care needed.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In the next 5 to 10 years, I would love for Hearts of Diamond Scrubs to be known all over the world. I would like to add a men’s line to my collection and a maternity line as well. I have so many things lined up for my business. I want to also add accessories we use on a daily basis as healthcare professionals.
