Check Out Nathalie Gordon’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathalie Gordon.

Hi Nathalie , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I officially started working in commercials and my first job out of university was as a runner at a production company. I worked my way up to production manager within the company and produced separately alongside my day job where I would shoot and edit music videos for local and emerging musicians. After just two years, I decided to quit. I realised very quickly that the traditional nine-to-five wasn’t for me. I’ve never really liked being told what to do, and I wanted more freedom to create in my own way, so I left to shoot music stills and edit videos full time. I thought I wanted to be a director, but after about a year I found myself far more interested in telling stories through photography. Around that time, my mum took over a hair salon, and I began photographing hair for her. It started quite organically, but I found I really enjoyed it creatively. From there, I expanded into hair and beauty work more broadly. These days I mostly shoot beauty, particularly macro beauty. I focus on parts of the face – lips are definitely my thing. I left London and moved to Los Angeles because I simply wanted a change and more sunshine. Everyone thought I was mad as I had never actually been to LA before, but I went for it anyway. I just had a feeling it was time to try something new and in a full circle moment I’m in LA as a photographer and director working mostly on commercials.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I can say for sure it has not been a smooth road, US immigration is a beast. I spent a lot of my time and work producing enough evidence for my O1 visa in order to stay. Navigating LA is also a very unique city but once you get settled and find an amazing community aka your peoples, it has so much charm. Now that I’m a permanent resident (green card holder) I’m super excited for the next chapter.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a photographer specialising in hair, beauty and skincare, with a particular passion for macro work. I’m especially known for my detailed close-ups that celebrate the richness of texture, tone and colour, most notably of lips. Lips have become something of a signature for me. There’s so much character and emotion in such a small part of the face, that I love exploring in both my commercial and fine art work.

My background was originally in production and music video editing, and I think that cinematic sensibility still comes through in the way I light and compose my shots. I love crafting an image that feels intentional and elevated, while still holding on to a sense of fun or intimacy.

I split my time between commercial campaigns for beauty and skincare brands, and my fine art photography practice. My large-scale lip prints have been exhibited many times including Saatchi Art’s: The Other Art Fair and the Leica Gallery in Los Angeles, which have been a real highlight for me.

What sets my work apart is the combination of precision and playfulness. I like things to be technically clean and beautifully lit, but there’s always a bit of personality, joy or even mischief in the frame. I’m proud to have created a space for myself that blends commercial success with genuine creative exploration, and to be known for something that feels uniquely mine.

How do you think about luck?
I think luck is kind of a myth. I think it’s about being at the right place and the right time and listening to your gut/intuition. Trust that you are doing the best you can, most of the time and I think ‘luck’ will follow and reward you.
