Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Ohan.
Hi Natalie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my cookie business roughly a year and a half ago after one day deciding I wanted to learn how to make decorated cookies. I found a local studio that taught classes and dragged a couple friends with me. During the class I told my friends that I was going to start a business and take over the cookie world. I laughed it off but they fully believed in me. A little while later I setup my Instagram and posted whatever photos I had. I offered cookies to friends and family for their parties to build a portfolio and slowly but surely it took off! One order led to another and before I knew it I was running a cookie business full time. I have now expanded my menu and offer a variety of other desserts!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, yes! The decorating aspect came pretty easily to me and having been involved in my family bakery in the past I learned how to manage inventory, talk with clients and navigate the challenges a baking business may have. One of the struggles I had when I first started was managing expectations, when a client would send over inspiration photos I felt the need to match it perfectly or risk upsetting the client. I have now learned that inspo is just that. Inspo. I take what the client sends me and put my own spin on things and make them my own.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in custom decorated royal icing cookies. I am most proud of the level of detail I put into every cookie and that detail is what sets me apart from the rest. I take the time to make sure all aspects are perfect, starting with the cookie itself. For example, if I bake a square cookie and it does not come out perfectly I will shave down the sides to make it a perfect square. I take a lot of pride in my work and I believe it truly does show in the end results.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
So many to choose from! I would have to say the one time my parents surprised my brother and I with a trip to Disneyland. They told us we were going to the movies and we pulled into the Disneyland parking lot and my brother and I went crazy!
