Today we’d like to introduce you to Molly Brandenburg.
Molly, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m a visual artist and also a voice artist and performer. When I look back, I realize I started drawing and being theatrical at an early age. I kept following these passions and went along wherever they took me. I’ve had many jobs along the way, but these two passions were always consistently engaging for me. The creative life has not only been a pursuit but a constant and reassuring companion.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been a lot of struggles along the way, mixed with some wonderful triumphs. Achieving a balance between working for a living and pursuing an artistic career wasn’t always easy. There have been corporate job layoffs (including a mass layoff from a podcast company last year) that were hard to bounce back from (but somehow you do), a divorce, life as a single mom, and—the day the theater group I was involved in had our theater building burn to the ground.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’ve always drawn and painted and been intrigued by fanciful characters expressed in loose lines and vivid colors. The colors can range from deep pink and cobalt blue to more muted tones like pale pink and sage green. I love to use color that evokes wonderful feelings like great passion or joy. Color is amazing that way.
I think the thing I’m most proud of is that I’ve continued to do this work, no matter what has been going on in my life. Life throws us a lot of curveballs, but through the various jobs I’ve had, and through many of life’s highs and lows, I’ve continued to let characters speak to me and guide me. Seeing how they turn out through the process of creating an illustration or developing a performance is always an exciting process.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
I feel very strongly that if you want to be an artist you have to honor the process and the journey. You’ve been blessed with a unique point of view and an ability to express it, so you have to engage with it and use it. If you want to have a life in art, I think you have to see yourself as a partner with the entities you create. You’re bringing them to life, and the world needs what you’re creating.
Of course, we live in a capitalist society, so you may have to find a balance between what you do for love and what you need to do for income, but I think if you hang in there, you can find that balance. Just don’t reject your gift because it isn’t making you a fortune. You were given a gift, and it’s part of you, so for God’s sake, treat it well!
