Check Out Miyako Hart’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miyako Hart

Miyako, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hello Voyage LA,

My name is Miyako Hart. My journey with flowers began in 2018.

It was just before Valentine’s Day, which is known as the busiest time for florists, when out of curiosity I wandered into a charming flower shop.

The shop was filled with beautiful Valentine’s blooms, and the owner seemed so busy that she joked about even needing her dog’s help!
Luckily, it was perfect timing, and the very next day, I started working there.

One of my happiest moments in the shop was setting up the flowers in the flower fridge after all the preparations were complete. I’d carefully arranged them by color, height, and type – each time stepping back, I couldn’t help but jump up and down with excitement at how stunning the colors and shapes were!

After four years of working in the flower shop, I started to imagine how amazing it would be to dedicate more time to focusing on each customer’s unique requests. What if I could host fun, flower-filled events?

That curiosity led me to take the leap in 2022, marking the beginning of my journey as “Flowers by Miyako.”

The rewarding part of running my own business is the freedom to build and organize everything from scratch. Whether it’s designing bouquets and arrangements, hosting pop-up shops, setting up a flower bar, or leading workshops, every aspect of my work is uniquely tailored.

Step by step, little by little, I am starting to make it happen.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been an exciting journey, but of course, not without its challenges.

My background is in art, so diving into business and numbers was like stepping into a completely new world for me.
Turning creativity into a viable business wasn’t easy.

For instance, choosing flowers is one of my favorite parts of the job. The ones that make my heart race are often rare, unique, or imported – sometimes hybrids – and, naturally, they come with a higher price tag. But I find it hard to compromise on quality.

Another challenge has been time. I have a tendency to really immerse myself in things until I’m completely satisfied, which means I sometimes spend longer than expected perfecting the details.

Balancing this with the realities of budgets and business timelines has been a tricky balancing act.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My artistic background plays a significant role in shaping my work. With a Bachelor’s degree in European Art and certification as a museum curator, I’ve always been deeply drawn to the world of visual expression.

Flowers, with their colors, shapes, expressions, and silent language, remind me a lot of quietly appreciating a painting. It brings me back to my time spent in art museums, where I would visit daily to study the masterpieces. I strive to incorporate the same elements of beauty, contemplation, and attention to detail into my floral designs and events.

To me floral arrangement is a beautiful form of living art. While we can’t take a painting from a museum to our homes, we can bring flowers inside and even touch them – how wonderful is that?

My brand is rooted in the essence of Japan, such as craftsmanship, delicate beauty, and courteous service.
At the same time, the vibrant cities I’ve lived in – Madrid, London, Shanghai, and now Los Angeles – have shaped me into who I am today. Each city has its own distinct charm that stays with me, and I’m excited to blend these diverse influences into my work.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
From the very beginning until now, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to receive tremendous support from so many people. As I mentioned earlier, I am deeply grateful to the flower shop owner for opening the door to the flower industry for me.

I’m truly thankful for the chance to work with talented senior designers on large projects. They generously shared their expertise with me, and I really believe it has contributed to my growth.

I also owe a lot to the local vendors who have supported me. Early on in my small business journey, I was surrounded by people who had already started their own ventures. They inspired me with their professionalism, passion and collaborative spirit.
