Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Novas.
Hi Michael , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Back in 2010, what started as a kid in middle school having a random day where he was messing around freestyling with friends would unlock a creative hobby that he didn’t know he was passionate about at the time. That’s an extreme simplification of the events that actually happened, as we can have an entire interview on origin stories, but I’ll keep that part short. It really unfolded around 2012 when my best friend started making music with me, and then he introduced me to another friend who also made music, and then the 3 of us would hang out practically every weekend for years just making music. At first, I did not know how to articulate my lyrics, and a lot of the time I would emulate artists that I was listening to at the time, like Drake, Big Sean, and J Cole, who were big inspirations in my art going forward. I’m a hip-hop fan, and that’s what was natural to gravitate towards when making music. At that time, I was only 16, so I didn’t have real-life experience, so a lot of my early music was things that I heard from other songs that were untrue to my life. That was something that naturally takes years to experience and develop a personal story to pull from when creating art. That culmination of life and art really became one in 2019 when I worked on my project at the time, “The One About Friends”. My best friend, Brandon Canon, produced that project, and I wrote the lyrics, and he also recorded, engineered, and mastered my vocals. That project in particular was the first time I felt I made something that really came from my life and felt very personal and special because of that. I can feel confident in saying that I made something timeless back then. Fast forward to 2025, and I started learning how to produce so that I could make my own beats to write and record. What started as one beat and then one song led to a lot of beats and a lot of songs I ended up producing, writing, recording, mixing, and mastering. All of a sudden, all that music led to an album which I can say is definitely my most personal body of work yet.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Any creative individual who has said they’ve had a smooth journey along the way is lying. My journey has been far from smooth. Every single step had roadblocks. Around the time that I started making music, my family was moving a lot so I never felt stability in one location, while still in the same city, it was still a lot. Of course at that time, I was also young so I dealt with a lot of things of my adolescence, heart breaks, loss, failure, etc. Around 2015-2018, I also was going through a lot mentally and I noticed I wasn’t making music as much, I was barely writing, barely recording, you name it. It wasn’t until the end of 2018 where things started to come to fruition with what would become my then project “The One about Friends”. All 2019 I felt creatively inspired in a way that I didn’t believe, I was writing again to a lot of different music. I was consistent that entire year and by September 2019, I ended up with a project. Something I felt that year was that that project was going to be my last one and I was going to stop making music and that was something I personally believed. From late 2019-early 2021 I didn’t make any more music and didn’t have that creative urge to even try. However, around February or March 2021, I heard the song “Seeing Green” by Nicki Minaj featuring Drake and Lil Wayne and something about that song sonically just sparked such a strong creative urge within me that i wanted to start writing again. At that time , it was conveniently timed that in the middle of 2022 was My friend and I’s 10 year anniversary of the very first mixtape we released and that became a strong driving factor creatively where I would want to constantly listen to different sounds and write. That was a defining moment for me as it made me realize that no matter what I say or how I feel, music is a part of me that I can’t easily get rid of and when that spark hits, it’s like lightning
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in a few different areas in the music space both behind the table as well as in front of the microphone. Music is a creative hobby for me where I like to write music to express something that I need to get out. I am an artist first. I’m also a sound engineer that is knowledgeable in a recording software Studio One that is used to record, mix, and master my vocals. I also recently started learning more production and use a program called Ableton to “make beats”. I now operate in all the main tables that are needed to get a song put together. I would probably be best known for my project “The One About Friends” that released on September 22, 2019 and is now offically on all platforms. I did recently release an album “Memoirs of a Broken Heart” on my brithday september 26, that is on all platforms. What separates me from others would have to be what I want out of what I do. I don’t want money, fame, etc. It’s a creative hobby for me and it’s fun for me to make something and have my close friends and whoever else listen.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Being aware and proactive to take opportunities that present themselves in the moment has been something I learned more and more over the course of my journey. Being aware of an opportunity but not being proactive can have you missing out on something that you will later regret and that regret comes with a heaviness that is devastating. Also, with creative endeavors, allow your curiosity to keep you learning more about what you do, You will surprise yourself with the sparks that come from that.
