Today we’d like to introduce you to Madeleine
Hi Madeleine, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I initially trained in Musical Theatre and was pursuing a career in acting and musical theatre in my late teens alongside starting my social media channels. Then unfortunately Covid hit and I lost my job and decided to go to university to study music. At university I was introduced to jazz music which was a game changer. I fell in love with the jazz, funk, soul and blues world and started a band to play covers around the city. I released my first single ‘Finally’ in my finally year at university. My time at university then came to an end and I had to re-enter the real world and earn money. I worked in investment property for a while. Then everything changed this December. I got dumped and fell so behind on rent that I decided to move back to my parents’ house and have a reset. I am now pursuing making music, social media and performing as a full-time career. I released my second single ‘Take the Hint’ this January (a song that seems to have struck a chord with everyone who has a job they don’t like!) and will be releasing singles every month this year. The next one is a huge pop ballad called ‘My House’… expect big belty high notes, epic 80’s drums and luscious strings.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest struggle for me has been financial. Pursing music can require a large upfront investment into recording and releasing music as well as purchasing equipment… not to mention all the costs that go into putting on a live show. Living costs in the UK right now are suffocating and it can be tricky to balance everything you want to achieve artistically with your budget.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am probably most known for my social media channels on TikTok and Instagram (@madeleinehq). I share content all to do with singing, songwriting and music theory and seem to have attracted an audience full of wonderful music nerds!
Now that I am releasing original music I am attracting individuals who want to listen to songs you can belt out in the car with your friends but don’t necessarily always want to listen to the same songs played on the radio.
The benefit of being an independent artist is you are not subject to the censorship of record labels and therefore my lyrics seem to really resonate with the average person… I sing what everyone else is thinking in their heads.
How do you think about happiness?
The feeling of writing a new song and sharing it with others is by far the best feeling. Art is the confirmation that you are not alone in your feelings and if I can help someone feel less alone, that is all the gratification I need.
