Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucky Diaz.
Hi Lucky , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in Stockton, California, in a Chicano family where music played from sunrise to sunset. Those records—rock en español, rock, and oldies—became my foundation.
After studying at Berklee College of Music, I moved to Copenhagen, Denmark, where I played seven nights a week in packed clubs, putting in ten-hour days and sharpening my craft. That grind taught me everything about discipline, heart, and connection.
When I became a dad, my mission shifted. I started writing music that reflected home—bilingual, full of rhythm, joy, and love. With my wife Alisha Gaddis, that became Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band.
Since then, we’ve made history as the first U.S.-born artists to win a Latin Grammy, earned multiple Grammys, and shared our work from the Kennedy Center to Austin City Limits and the Smithsonian.
Now, through my books with HarperCollins, I’m expanding that same vision—celebrating cultura, family, and identity through words and melody.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been anything but smooth. This path takes courage. I’ve played to rooms with only the bartender in them. I’ve driven through snowstorms and tornados. I’ve had doors close because people didn’t understand what bilingual family music even was.
But every challenge built something stronger. It pushed me to define my voice instead of chasing what was popular.
As a Mexican-American artist, I’ve had to fight to be seen in spaces that weren’t built for me. But the wins—our Grammys, the Latin Grammy history we made, the stages at the Lollapalooza and SXSW—mean more because of those struggles.
It’s all part of the same song: resilience, family, and love leading the way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I create music and stories for families. My work lives where rhythm, language, and love meet. I’m best known as the frontman and songwriter for Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band and as the author of bilingual picture books with HarperCollins, including Paletero Man, La Guitarrista, and Fix It Familia.
What I do is simple but powerful—I celebrate cultura. My songs and stories uplift families who’ve rarely seen themselves represented in American media. Everything I make carries the joy, humor, and color of our everyday lives.
Our band made history as the first U.S.-born artists to win a Latin Grammy, and we’ve since earned multiple Grammys and performed on iconic stages.
But what I’m most proud of is seeing a kid light up when they hear Spanish in a song or recognize their neighborhood in a story.
What sets my work apart is authenticity. I’m not trying to fit into a market—I’m building one. Every project is a love letter to my roots, my family, and the next generation of dreamers.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is riding in my dad’s old truck through Stockton on hot summer days, the windows rolled down and the radio blasting oldies. The air smelled like oranges and asphalt.
He’d tap the steering wheel listening to Chuck Berry and The Beach Boys.
Those drives felt endless, like the world was ours. That’s where I first understood how music could make ordinary moments feel magical. Those songs still live inside everything I write.
