Check Out Logan Sommers’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Logan Sommers.

Hi Logan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in the Midwest and was a very creative and highly visual child. I could spend hours by myself building with blocks, drawing, and decorating my room. These interests would stick with me through my teen years and into college, where I studied journalism and graphic design. After graduating, I spent a year living in San Francisco doing some self-discovery and working odd jobs before ending up in New York City to pursue a magazine career. While I did briefly work for a publication, I quickly realized that sitting behind a desk day after day was not satisfying all my creative needs. After a bit of soul-searching and trying to break into a few other fields, I stumbled into the world I knew very little about but appealed to my creative yearnings: visual display. I accepted a position at Barneys New York (R.I.P.), where I helped to create and install window displays at their flagship store. It was an amazing and unique experience that exposed me to a whole new world of fashion and art, as well as lots of incredibly creative individuals,

After three years at Barneys, I felt a different kind of calling. I had grown tired of the intense and non-stop pace of life in New York and was ready to head west to sunnier surroundings (and a bit more breathing room) in Los Angeles. I would continue my work in visual display in my new home, this time working for fashion retailer Forever 21. While creating store displays for high-profile locations on the west coast, I also traveled to new store openings all over the world, from Israel to Japan to Australia.

Another three years went by, and once again, I was feeling that all-too-familiar longing for something new. So I decided to take a leap, leave the world of fashion and visual display entirely, and dip my toes in interior design. I started by working part-time in a furniture showroom, which helped me make a connection to a designer, Jason Martin, who eventually hired me as his design assistant. I learned just about everything I know about residential interiors while at his firm, Martin & Brockett, and got to tackle all components of the industry. I then made my way to another firm, Wendy Hayworth Interiors, where I worked on a number of restaurant and hospitality projects. And while interior design did feel like a more natural fit for my talents, somewhere deep down, I felt like there was a better creative role for me out there.

Around this time, I was forwarded a job posting for a unique position with Bobby Berk, an interior designer and host of Queer Eye. I had actually met Bobby through friends years ago in New York and had been a fan of Queer Eye since it premiered in 2018. He was looking for an editor and stylist to join his team, someone that would work with the creative director to build his brand and support in a number of varying creative tasks. This felt like the job I had been waiting for – one that would combine all the different skills I had previously honed in journalism, graphic design, visual display, and interiors – and so I jumped at the chance and applied.

Three and a half years later, this position has been everything I hoped for and much more. I’ve helped to build the Bobby Berk brand by creating and writing interior design and lifestyle content for his website, assisting with brand partnerships, and styling photoshoots. In my new role as the creative content lead, I’ve also taken on new tasks producing still and video content for social media, developing new product lines, and promoting Bobby’s numerous design projects. The variety of creative tasks has proven to be quite fulfilling and really an ideal fit for my background,

In a career that has spanned 15 years, I find myself with a newfound feeling of contentment. I truly believe I am where I’m meant to be and that I’m (finally) fully flexing all my creative muscles.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been challenges! Just getting my foot in the door after college was certainly challenging. I’ve also basically reinvented my career and started from scratch not once but twice. Those were definitely the hardest periods of my professional life. It definitely required a lot of ingenuity and perseverance to say the least. But when you know deep down that it’s time to try something new, you just make it work. So that’s what I did. I took lots of small steps to reach out to connections in those new fields, started at the bottom, and worked up slowly but surely.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Both my personal and professional work centers around curating and creating. I’m constantly curating a wide array of products, whether they are design objects, furniture, lifestyle products, or just the furnishings in my own home. I feel I have a unique point of view and the ability to look at something from a broad perspective and narrow it down to a considered selection that expresses myself or a brand. I love creating all sorts of content, whether it’s writing, social media assets, interior design, or product mood boards, and I think my ability to do all those things also sets me apart as a creative.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
A lot of people have taken chances on me or given me a break when I really needed it. Jason Martin was the first person to hire me as an interior design assistant, and he taught me so much about design and that industry. And Bobby Berk is the person who I really have to thank for hiring me for my current role – and for allowing me the opportunity to transition my career into more of a content creator, curator, and writer role.
