Check Out Ken May’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken May.

Hi Ken, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my journey as a music lover and curious listener, exploring underground electronic sounds that inspired me to experiment with mixing tracks. Over time, what began as a personal passion turned into live performances at local clubs and events, where I developed my style blending industrial, witch house, darkwave, and synth-driven genres.

Being part of the SoCal scene led me to become a resident DJ at several nights including Club Fallout and Nachturnal, and to share my sound at festivals like Wasteland Weekend, DEFCON, and Neotropolis. Along the way, I began producing my own music, which resulted in the release of Contraliminal and other projects.

Today, I see myself not just as a DJ, but as a curator of experiences — bringing heavy, atmospheric energy to audiences and helping keep the dark electronic community thriving.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all, but I wouldn’t trade the journey for anything. Being a DJ while running my own business has meant wearing a lot of hats, often all in the same day. As an entrepreneur there is no safety net, so every decision, every investment, and every late night is on your shoulders. Pair that with being a single dad, and the balancing act becomes even more intense.

There were times when I would finish a late set, get just a couple of hours of sleep, and still be up early making breakfast, helping with homework, and jumping straight into business meetings. Financial uncertainty, time management, and the emotional weight of making sure my child had everything they needed were some of the biggest struggles.

Those challenges shaped me and pushed me to be more focused, creative, and determined. They made every win feel that much more meaningful, whether it was landing a big gig, growing my business, or simply having the freedom to be there for my kid when it mattered most.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a DJ, music producer, and event curator with a passion for creating unforgettable experiences. I specialize in dark electronic music — industrial, witch house, synthwave, darkwave, and alternative club sounds — and I put a lot of thought into building sets that take people on a journey.

I work hard to make sure that every event I’m part of is both exciting and safe. I want people to feel completely immersed in the music while also feeling welcome and included, no matter who they are. My goal is for people to walk away feeling like they truly experienced something, not just listened to a playlist.

What I am most proud of is the community that has grown around my work. Seeing strangers connect on the dance floor, or hearing that someone felt free to be themselves at one of my events, means everything to me.

What sets me apart is my mix of passion and precision. I treat every set as a story, and every event as a chance to give people a moment they’ll remember. Being an entrepreneur and a single parent has given me the discipline to plan, the creativity to take risks, and the drive to keep raising the bar for the experiences I create.
