Check Out Kc Schomas’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kc Schomas

Hi KC, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started working in production while going to college in Minneapolis. Hungry to learn, I took on-set opportunities in the summers and on weekends. I started as a PA then quickly fell into Assistant Director positions, before I even fully understood what an AD was. When I moved to Los Angeles after graduating, I knew I’d essentially be starting over as a much tinier fish in a massive pond. My first few jobs were in TV as an Office PA, and from there, with enough nudging to my wonderful boss, I ended up with my first staffed job on set. At the time, I still had my mind set on going down the Assistant Director path, and while I still love to AD on smaller projects while I can, I envision a different path for myself now. That’s sort of the beauty of the industry, the “choose-your-own-adventure.” Today I find myself primarily costuming for work, while also working full time developing and directing the projects I’m passionate about. It took a while to find the right balance for me, and it feels good to have gotten there.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I had only a year of professional experience in Los Angeles under my belt before the pandemic began. Then as we were crawling back from that, the SAG and WGA strikes. Now most recently, the fires. All of these historical events on top of the regular setbacks that come with trying to find your foothold in the industry. Living paycheck to paycheck, the long hours, not getting to see your loved ones. It can be a very militant lifestyle.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I certainly know what I’d like my niche to be as a creative in this world, but I don’t think I can say yet that it’s something that I’m known for or specialize in. I write and direct period pieces, and have a specific historical style that I hope I achieve with those projects, but I haven’t made enough films in that vein yet to definitively say I’ve mastered those techniques. I feel very much that I’m still in the infancy of my creative career and I can’t wait to see where I’ll go, but I imagine I’ll still feel that way even when I have decades of that
experience under my belt.

How do you think about happiness?
Surrounding myself with love and community makes me happy. The resiliency of the people in this city and industry and the ways in which we take care of each other. My immediate community and knowing I have a safe space with them. The unconditional love I get from my dog. Those are the driving forces behind my happiness right now.
