Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Katsenis.
Hi Katherine, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started turning photographs in to digital oil paintings because I noticed that many people wanted something unique for their home or office. Since I was already a photographer, it was a natural segue. I spent about 5 years training with Photoshop and Corel Painter experts, “Master Painters” as they are called. This is how I learned to create compelling portrait from photos.
My strength is being able to bring out even more the the story than you see in a photo. This is why people commission me to turn their favorite photo in to a digital oil painting.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest challenge is that people can usually only see my work online, in a digital format. This is not the best. These works of art need to be seen after they are printed. But seeing digital images still gives a basic idea of the beauty in turning a photo into a painting.
Learning the software as well as traditional art skills was definitely a challenge. You have to stick with it and the learning curve was substantial.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I turn people’s cherished photo into a digital oil painting. I often get requests for memorial services. Pets are also popular. My own photography portrait clients frequently ask me to make a painting out of their favorite portrait from a session.
What sets me out is my general skills in painting, but also helping clients select a good photo. Or, if a photo needs to be adapted so that it will look more painterly, I can do that too.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Like most artists, good luck is not something I have experienced a lot of. You have to believe in yourself and never quit.
