Check Out Kalyn Fultz’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalyn Fultz.

Hi Kalyn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Throughout my life, I’ve always felt the desire to create but I never fully knew how to express that artistic energy. From childhood up to my teenage years, I absolutely hated reading and writing because of my dyslexia. There was little about English class I enjoyed except for creative writing such as poems or short stories. The one type of book you could get me to read was a comic book. Naturally, this lead to a large collection. They say focus on what you love and it will bring you happiness. I was on the path all along and one day I realized I was walking it. Like many of us, my journey as an artist started with inspiration. In a casual conversation with a close friend, I was encouraged to create a comic book. Neither of us could imagine the ripple effect that those words would have. The Great Work had begun. The alchemy of art is truly mysterious and wonderful. Through the process of transmuting immaterial ideas into physical pieces of art, I was transformed. As I shaped the art, the art shaped me.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I am dyslexic so this makes reading and writing extremely difficult. This learning “disability”, as it is classified, made me feel less than. Learning to read was an embarrassing struggle that eventually affected my confidence. I was held back in school and forced into torturous tutoring with teachers who didn’t understand how to make a connection. Dyslexia is not something you grow out of. But maybe if so much focus wasn’t on reading and writing then I wouldn’t be a self-published writer today.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an independent comic book writer/creator. Manly focusing on the action, adventure and superhero genres of writing at this stage in my career. I recently self-published my first comic. A supernatural spy adventure titled SHADE. That is something that I had been working on for the past few years, an achievement that I’ll always be proud of. I have a couple of projects in development right now, including the next chapter of SHADE. I’m not really worried about what sets me apart from other creators. We all want to create dope stuff and letting each other inspire us only makes our art better.

How do you think about happiness?
So much in this world brings me happiness. The main things that I’m really leaning into right now is being creative and producing something, it could be writing a page for a story or developing a new character or designing something. Expressing my creativity adds fulfillment to my day. Also time spent in nature. I love trees, hiking and camping, being outside in general brings me a lot of happiness.
