Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Monte.
Josh, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a 23 year old artist/creative that loves the art of building songs. I started out trying to make music in highschool but it was never anything I was satisfied with, so I ended up heading to college for musical theater. I got really depressed out there, I felt like I wasn’t going anywhere or doing anything I could be really put into. I think I quickly realized how much I wanted to make music regardless of the outcome and found that staying in college and working towards something I no longer had the passion for would only be detrimental to my health. I’ve been vocal producing and engineering for other people since then to get my skill set up. During that time I’ve created and destroyed two albums, just to get to the one that released on July 11th. I feel it’s been a journey of silent movement. I’ve kept my head down and stayed listening. I’ve worked hard to create something I’m genuinely proud of. Loving it myself was truly the only necessary reward.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been smooth at all. I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety and addiction for a long while, some days I can take on the world and other days it’s hard to even get out of bed. I feel stuck and isolated, and very lonely at times even when I know I have many people around me who love me. The world is a huge place and it gets hard trying to not feel so small. I feel that many people have had an expectation of me to be at a certain point in my life already. I had a lot of people believing in me and I’ve always felt like I let them down by not meeting those expectations. Sometimes I wonder if they think I wasted my talent or future. I can only work hard enough to make them proud one day.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a singer, producer, and engineer. I play 4 instruments but I’m definitely best at drums. I’d say I’m great at building a song from the ground up. In my experience, it usually starts on a feeling I may have and I get curious enough to want to explore how it might sound. I’ll start with drums, either a loop or play it myself. Once I’ve found a good flow then I jump on keys and guitar, after that it’s bass. Add some effects and then arrange the song. At this point I just start writing. Most of the time the words just fall into place and I realize what I’ve written about after it all comes out. I get into a sort of flow state where I can hyper focus and almost go on autopilot when writing. I’m most proud of the fact that I learned everything on my own. It was a brutal 10+ years of trial and error but hearing the difference now makes it all worth it. My music has a very raw but clean sound with melodies that’ll catch your ear. I really believe it’s for all people to enjoy! I also just released my first album on July 11th!
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I’m in a collective of creatives called WEEDCOFFEE. Which stands for “working efficiently every day creating original frequencies for everyone, everywhere” it’s a community of great people who just want to create something bigger than themselves. We are truly a group of Greater Fools and I’m proud to be involved.
