Check Out Jon Vio’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Vio

Hi Jon, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my career in design at a very young age. My brother had a copy of Photoshop 7, and at age 12 was fascinated that you could create graphics and art with a computer. From there – I was having relatives and uncles hitting me up to design their logos in my early teenage years. My career has mostly been self-taught, teaching myself the basics of design and Adobe software.

My background was originally in brand work and logo design, but over the years its transitioned mostly into the digital space. Site design, coding, motion design, 3D animation and such. But I’ve always considered myself a renaissance man. If there’s a tool or way to create, I will learn it. I’m always curious about and have always been fascinated about every part of the creative process and what goes into a successful design.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not. Starting out was rough. Getting rejected from clients very early on in my career was rough. I didn’t know how to set proper boundaries and protect myself. It’s easy to get pushed around by clients, especially in the creative field. People don’t tend to respect creative types like they do other professions. You have to learn to stick up for yourself and your work, because more often than not nobody else will do it for you.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I do mostly digital design, but I’m always doing a variety of things. I love brand work, logo design, animation, motion design, 3D. Lately, a lot of my focus has been on 3D work and animation, which is not something traditionally a lot of designers do. But I love to merge these two aspects of creativity, design and motion.

I’ve always loved 1980s film and science fiction as well, and incorporating my love for these things into the 3D space along with design has been a real treat in my design journey.

Mostly though, I’m known for my brand work. I’ve designed logos for NASA missions that have reached other planets, so I guess it’s really hard to top something like that.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Learn. Have fun. Don’t worry about what the design world or community is following or saying. Design what you like, how you like it. Find what you like designing, and find your own unique aesthetic and taste.

Also, don’t let other push you around. Be kind and respectful, but also learn to respect yourself and your work. Your clients will respect you for it as well.
