Today we’d like to introduce you to Janez Veternik
Hi Janez, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a guy from Luka’s homeland, Slovenia. To be honest, I’ve been following Luka since he was a little kid, and it’s hard to believe, but I predicted everything about his rise to become one of the best basketball players on the globe. Seven years ago, I created a Facebook page and Instagram account about our hero, which is now the world’s biggest fan base dedicated to Luka Dončić. This whole project is my baby, and I’m super proud that I can share Luka’s story with the world. Like Luka, I also love Slovenia.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My path? Far from easy, but every challenge has been worth it, especially when it brings me back home to Slovenia. You know, Slovenia, just two million of us, but we’ve got it all. You can ski on Vogel or Krvavec, swim in the pristine waters of Bled and Bohinj, hike through the untouched beauty of Triglav National Park, and end the day with a dip in the Adriatic Sea. It’s truly a special place, and my love for it runs deep.
My journey started on the basketball court. Fourteen years of dedication, but eventually, I felt the need for a different kind of challenge. I built a street workout park, a personal training ground, where I pushed myself to learn and grow. But I knew I needed more. So, I left my beloved Slovenia and headed to the UK, determined to become a certified personal trainer and nutrition specialist.
Graduating in 2020, I immediately jumped into the fitness world, working in a local gym. That led to an incredible opportunity, working on conditioning with players at Bristol Soccer Club. It was a fantastic experience, but then life took another turn when I met my wife. We both felt the pull of home, the undeniable draw of Slovenia.
Returning was a homecoming, and I’ve since dedicated myself to basketball coaching and individual athlete preparation. It’s a way to give back, to share my knowledge and passion with the next generation, right here in the heart of the country I love. So, while there were challenges – leaving home, starting over in a new country, and navigating the uncertainties of a fitness career – every step has led me back to where I belong, contributing to the sport and the people of Slovenia.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Well, first off, thank you for the kind words! It’s truly an honor. For those who might not know me, I’m deeply passionate about two things: sports and my beautiful Slovenia. I’m a personal trainer and nutrition specialist, but I also have a unique side project that’s very close to my heart.
You could say I’m probably the biggest Luka Dončić fan on the planet. I’ve followed his career since he was a young kid, even when he made that bold move from Slovenia to Madrid. I saw his potential then, and while some people doubted him, I knew he was destined for greatness. And look at him now – he’s one of the best in the world! I’m proud to say I called that one.
For the past seven years, I’ve dedicated myself to building a massive Luka Dončić fan base. I’ve posted news, stories, statistics, and videos, and I haven’t missed a single one of his games. It’s been amazing to watch my ‘baby’ grow into the phenomenon he is today, and I’m incredibly proud that my fan base has become the largest in the world.
My next big step is to take this passion to the next level. I’m planning a trip to Los Angeles, and I want to document the entire experience in a movie. It’s a way to share my love for Luka and my Slovenian pride with the world.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me? Without a doubt, it’s the people and creatures that fill my life with love and joy. Family and friends are the cornerstone of everything. They bring laughter, support, and meaning to every day.
Being a husband of my beautiful wife Jasna and father to my two beautiful daughters, Lia and Tara, has completely redefined what matters to me. They are my world. And I’m incredibly grateful for the strong bonds I have with my friends, who are always there, through thick and thin.
My deep connection with animals also holds a special place in my heart. Growing up on a farm nestled in the Slovenian mountains, I was surrounded by cows, sheep, goats, rabbits, dogs, and cats. That childhood instilled in me a profound respect and love for all living beings. Animals bring such pure, unconditional joy into my life.
And I must also express my gratitude to a very special person, my dear friend Mirjam Poterbin, Luka Dončić’s mother. Her unwavering help and support over the years have been invaluable. She’s an amazing woman, and I’m incredibly proud and thankful that she raised her son to be such an exceptional player and, more importantly, a truly great human being.
