Today we’d like to introduce you to Hunter O’Brien.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began my career in post-production in 2019 as an Assistant Editor and DIT at a production company, where I quickly developed a deep appreciation for the visual side of storytelling. Although I had not yet worked in DaVinci Resolve, I was captivated by the creative potential of color and its ability to shape emotion, atmosphere, and narrative impact. When the opportunity arose for someone to take on color work, I embraced the challenge and saw it as a chance to expand my skill set and elevate my creative contribution.
After several weeks of intensive study and hands-on experimentation, I graded my first feature film. The strong response from the team reaffirmed that color was where I wanted to focus my career. Since then, I have worked professionally as a colorist on projects including Thinestra, Good Daughter, Haunted Discoveries, and Don’t Let the Cat Out, as well as more than a dozen feature films, multiple television series, and numerous short-form projects.
Each project has presented new creative and technical challenges that have helped me grow as an artist. My goal is to continue refining my craft and to create imagery that inspires others in the industry just as much as the great films that first inspired me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have certainly been challenges along the way, but each one has pushed me to become a stronger and more well-rounded colorist. One of the most valuable lessons I have learned is that technical ability alone is not enough. True success in this craft comes from being an excellent collaborator. Through the wide range of projects I have taken on, I have learned how to adapt to each client’s creative vision, communication style, and expectations to consistently deliver results that exceed their goals and reflect their story with authenticity and impact.
Another important challenge has been developing a seamless approach to remote collaboration. Many of the projects I work on involve clients in different regions, which often makes in-person sessions impractical. I have refined a workflow that keeps clients fully engaged and confident in the process, no matter where they are. This includes clear communication, thoughtful review materials, and technical safeguards to ensure color accuracy and consistency, even when working with non-calibrated setups.
These experiences have not only sharpened my technical skills but also strengthened my ability to build trust, foster collaboration, and create a positive creative experience for every client. I take pride in delivering work that looks beautiful and makes clients feel supported every step of the way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a colorist who specializes in shaping the visual tone and emotional language of a story through color. My work spans feature films, television, and short-form content.
I’m known for my collaborative approach and commitment to both technical precision and creative storytelling. Whether working in person or remotely, I focus on creating a smooth, communicative process that makes clients feel supported and confident in the final look.
What sets me apart is my ability to combine artistic intuition with a deep understanding of collaboration. I do more than grade footage; I help translate emotion through color. I take pride in creating imagery that not only enhances the story but also leaves a lasting impression on both the filmmaker and the audience.
How do you think about luck?
I believe luck has played a role in opening certain doors, but hard work, preparation, and persistence have always determined the outcome. Early in my career, I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time when the company I worked for needed someone to take on color grading. That opportunity completely changed the direction of my career, but it was the hours I spent studying, experimenting, and pushing myself creatively that allowed me to turn that moment of luck into a lasting profession.
In this industry, luck might get you a chance, but what you do with that chance is what really matters. I try to approach every opportunity with gratitude, curiosity, and the mindset that great results come from effort and collaboration, not coincidence.
