Today we’d like to introduce you to Funsleep / Nicholas Pigeon.
funsleep / Nicholas, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up playing in garage bands around Orange County starting at 14, and was always making little songs on my laptop, uploading them to SoundCloud as part of my solo project. I’ve always been a creative person, and over the years that’s taken different forms. For example producing DIY music videos for local bands under Late Bloomer Media, or hosting community events through a collective called The Common Ground. Music’s just always been there, no matter what other endeavor I was pursuing.
The energy of the Orange County music scene had a big impact on me early on. Even though it’s shifted over time, I still carry that spark I felt as a teenager going to all these cool DIY venues and house shows. There was something special about being surrounded by creativity in unexpected places with unexpected people. That mix of suburban quietness and underground noise really shaped the way I approach making stuff.
Over time, my sound has evolved into something rooted in electronic pop, but it’s still super fluid and genre-less because of all the different influences I’ve picked up along the way. From punk shows to ambient synth stuff to dance music. I’ve taken bits and pieces from everywhere. funsleep honestly feels the most me it’s ever been.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve also gone through phases where I stepped away from music completely to focus on other creative outlets, or just to reset. But in a weird way, those pauses were necessary. They gave me perspective and actually brought me back to music in a more honest way. I used to spend a lot of time comparing myself to people who were further along in their journey, thinking I was behind or not making the type of thing that everyone else would enjoy. But eventually, I stopped trying to please others’ ears/eyes and just committed to a sound that actually felt true to me. That shift made all the difference because it’s when things finally started to click creatively.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I release music under the name funsleep, and I make electronic pop that blends dance, lo-fi house, and indie influences. My sound is intentionally genre-blurring, but always rooted in this balance of movement and emotion, music that fits both the party and solo moments.
I write, produce, and creatively direct everything myself, from recording and producing my own tracks to directing my own music videos and the visuals. I’m really proud to have the skills and assets to do a full rollout independently. That DIY approach keeps everything personal and authentic, and lets me fully control how my art is presented.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Growing up in Orange County, Los Angeles always felt super close but still kind of magical. It was like this creative hub just up the freeway. What I love most is how big it is, so there’s always something happening, and so many different types of people doing cool, creative things.
But at the same time, the size can be kind of overwhelming. There’s so much happening all the time that it can feel hard to stand out, especially with how fast things move online. It’s easy to feel lost in the noise or like you’re constantly comparing yourself to others.
