Check Out Femme Future Perfect’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Femme Future Perfect

Hi Femme Future Perfect, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We are a trio of women/non-binary screenwriters who came together to create the Femme Future Perfect podcast to amplify our voices at a time when they aren’t being heard.
As a Stowe Story Labs Launch Fellow, Goldie met Lauren in Birmingham through one of their programs. The two L.A. residents became fast friends. A few months later, Goldie met Jaime at Stowe’s retreat in Carmel, and they immediately hit it off. While Jaime is Canadian, she visits L.A. frequently, so Goldie introduced her to Lauren. It was no wonder we got along: we all write work that pushes femme voices into traditionally male spaces.
Collectively, we have won numerous awards for our writing, and all have representation. Yet we found moving into certain genre spaces as female-identifying writers was almost impossible. So we thought, ‘why not make our own stories’? Since we all love horror and sci-fi, and those are very tough to break into as femmes in Hollywood, we focused on those two genres.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We’ve been lucky. Our podcast came together rather seamlessly. Goldie proposed the series to Lauren and Jaime, then a few months later we had episodes recorded. Through personal contacts, we were able to secure an Emmy-winning studio for our sound design, and incredible voice talent from shows like ARCANE and ATTACK ON TITAN. It was like it was meant to be.
If we had one major challenge, it was the changing landscape in the country. We launched our fundraising campaign right after the election last November when many people we knew were avoiding social media. We’d hoped to be celebrating femme voices as our first episode dropped near inauguration day. Sadly, that was not the case. Femme Future Perfect is more necessary than we’d anticipated. We’re committed to using our platform to amplify those voices.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Femme Future Perfect is a scripted sci-fi/horror anthology podcast series featuring ten minute episodes. We produced a BLACK MIRROR-style show that explores how women/non-binary creators make genre without Hollywood’s patriarchal filter – and it’s a lot of fun! For the first batch of six episodes, we each wrote two. Goldie’s are dark sci-fi/horror. Her first episode, STIM DOLL, sees a sex doll become sentient and rebel against their makers. Jaime’s are quirky sci-fi. Her episode BENEATH explores depression through a researcher living at the bottom of Mariana Trench. Lauren’s environmentalist episode, GOODS, is sci-fi/comedy adapted from her Kennedy Center-honored play.
We write about the world around us, our collective anger at the rise of the alt-right, and always with the hope that we can change things.

What are your plans for the future?
Currently, we’re going into production on our second batch of six episodes. It’s exciting to see how much we’ve grown in such a short time!
We are developing a non-scripted component to our show, as well as fun bonus content for our Patreon subscribers.
Our mission is to showcase voices like ours in a time when programs that supported them are quickly disappearing. It’s so important right now that we make our own art, and use our platform to elevate underrepresented storytellers. We plan on working with other women/non-binary creatives to help them shape their stories into future Femme Future Perfect episodes.
