Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Abell.
Hi Erica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My love of food started when I was young. I was always in the kitchen making something with my father. Once I graduate high school, I jump into culinary school at Kitchen Academy in Hollywood California which did help further my knowledge of cooking but definitely didn’t paint a clear picture of kitchen life. From culinary school, I worked at Inn of the Seventh Ray, Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion, Boneyard Bistro as well as a bunch of smaller restaurants. In 2019, I partnered up with Frank Howell & Walker Roach to open up The Burbank Pub. We have been running The Burbank Pub for the last three years and are transitioning into Broken Compass tiki bar. It has been a challenge to reform into this tropical oasis but we are just about ready to re-open our doors as Broken Compass.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have definitely run into many potholes along this path. It was already hard to start up a restaurant without a person or company with a big name or money to back you. It’s hard being a women in this industry. Last but not least Covid! We were open for six months and kicking butt, then the shutdowns. We survived thanks to a lot of hard work and the friends and family we made on this journey.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Besides co-captaining The Burbank Pub/Broken Compass, I run the kitchen. I am in the kitchen all day every day making sure we stand out. I am known to constantly come up with new and exciting specials every week, wild and crazy burgers as well as some kick-ass fish and chips. I love to keep our regulars on their toes.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
