Today we’d like to introduce you to Emrah Ozhan.
Emrah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in Turkey, Eskisehir, in 1981. grow up in a small town hanging around in nature as an alone kid. I was always into drawing since I was a kid. in middle school, my art class teacher invited me to his studio as an apprentice. I worked for four years and learned the basics of academic drawing and painting techniques from him. After that, I went to fine arts high school. It was a magical year, and I learned much from my excellent teachers. I always want to be an animator. My passion for animations was undeniable, but the year was 1995, and back then, in my hometown, ceramics manufacturing was a big industry. My father recommends I study ceramics design instead of animation because of the lack of technology and possibilities of finding a job back in those years. And see me in a ceramics class at the university, and I wouldn’t say I like it. That’s where my tattoo carrier started because I was not taking my classes and just hanging around with my new friends from the university. One of them built a tattoo machine and asked me to tattoo him. My curiosity about tattooing is, and demand is getting more prominent at this moment; I was kicked out of my university, and it’s for me to move to another art school, and it has to be one of the best. I moved to Istanbul and entered the Mimar Sinan fine art university graphic design department in a year. At the same time, I find a job as a resident tattooer in one of the most well-known tattoo studios in Istanbul. It was between 2004 and 2011.
Throughout the year, my country’s political system changed incorrectly. As a result, artists like us couldn’t find room to grove and extend our abilities.
That’s where I decided to relocate. I applied for an artist visa and came to the states.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Finding high-quality tattoo equipment was very hard 20 years ago. The new artists are fortunate, it’s so easy right now.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have studied art since a young age. My well-known part is my tattoos.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
People have to know that after 22 years of tattooing, I still have a passion for my work, and I am still enjoying tattooing.
