Check Out Elliott Nes’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elliott Nes.

Hi Elliott, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started painting stencils, which I’m best known for, in 2010. I’ve been around art my whole life thanks to my parent’s encouragement. In 2010, I found myself with a lot of free time when I stopped playing baseball seriously and funneled my energy into this new art form. By 2016 I felt I had built up a distinctive style and a look that was unique to me – this is when I really started showing my work, promoting it, and being honestly proud of it.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I do this first and foremost for myself. I think that lets me take any disappointments in the art world in stride. Of course, I’d love to be in shows all over and doing murals all the time, but I try to remind myself I do this because it keeps me sane and it keeps me out of too much trouble.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Within the last couple of years have started feeling comfortable calling myself an artist. I hold myself to high standards so it has taken a lot of work and exploration to feel like I have something to say. I’m known probably mostly for my stencil work, but I also do a bit of Graphic Design for event posters and zines, and over the pandemic have expanded to learning some more drawing, painting, paper craft, etc. I think trying out some new mediums have allowed me to take new perspectives to my main work of stenciling. I’m always trying to consume artwork and I think that curiosity is what has pushed my art to be better and more unique to me.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I learned I need to get outside. I need the city, the people, bars, restaurants and art shows. I found it hard to be inspired when I was stuck in the same space.
