Check Out Devin Hicks’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Hicks

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey with dance began in high school, initially sparked by my interest in Musical Theater. As my passion for dance grew, I dedicated myself to daily training throughout high school and into college at the University of Redlands, where I earned a degree in Theater Business with a focus on dance. During this time, I was privileged to dance with the University Dance Company and developed a strong interest in choreography.

After graduating, I made the leap to Los Angeles to pursue a full-time career in dance and choreography. The city has been incredibly supportive, offering me a vibrant community and abundant opportunities that have exceeded my expectations. With my dedication to choreography and dance, I now teach dance to all ages, as well as dance and choreograph for Artists, companies, and clients throughout LA and the Country!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Navigating life as an artist, especially in the demanding arts and entertainment industry, is never straightforward. Balancing artistic integrity with the pressures of making your craft your livelihood brings unique challenges and strains. Learning to embrace criticism and accept assistance has been crucial for my growth.

My initial hurdle was internal – overcoming my fear of failure. Throughout my life, I’ve always aspired to greatness and held high expectations for myself. When I fell short or felt unprepared for my goals, rediscovering the inspiration and joy that performing arts brought me was essential. It reaffirmed that I was on the right path.

Another significant challenge has been collaborating with others. As individuals brimming with emotions and opinions, artists navigate complex relationships with clients of varying needs. This journey has involved relearning how to market myself effectively, maintain professional connections, and uphold my personal values. The entertainment industry can be jarring; not everyone has your best interests at heart. It’s a place where some may treat you poorly or dismiss your potential. Interactions like these greatly hinder the journey of a working artist like myself. I’ve learned to assess the room and decide whose feedback to prioritize. To quote my queen Lady Gaga “There could be 100 people in the room, but it only takes 1.” While this is undeniably true, that one person doesn’t necessarily have to be the individual offering you an opportunity. My support has grown into a network of friends, and family and colleagues who appreciate and believe in me for who I am and what I bring to the table.

My key takeaway from navigating challenges and obstacles is the importance of surrounding yourself with supportive individuals. To anyone reading this, identify those people in your life and listen to their guidance, as they are the ones who truly impact your journey. Focus on those who genuinely care about your success, rather than those who barely acknowledge your presence. Trust me, one day, they won’t be able to forget your name!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a dancer, choreographer, actor and performer! I primarily specialize in dance and choreography, and have developed an amazing career during my short time in LA. Early in my LA journey, I began teaching dance of all ages at Sophie Dance and Level Up Dance Academy. Concurrently, I had the honor of collaborating with Pop artist CERANDA, who trusted me with choreographing multiple live shows and three music videos. I quickly developed my understanding of working with artists and curating movements designed for the stage and camera. Working with artists has taught me how to develop movement in the lens of the artist, reimagine it with the guidance of a director, reapplying my artistic influence, and then perfecting it for the viewer’s experience and enjoyment.

Over the years, my roster of collaborations has expanded significantly, encompassing multiple artists, live shows, music videos, and various creative projects across Television, Celebrity Parties, Baht Mitzvahs, Corporate events, Flash Mobs, training programs, Weddings, and concept videos.

One of my recent milestones is “Imposters,” a conceptual piece I choreographed and directed, exploring the theme of imposter syndrome. Featuring talented artists IZYE, Adam Wright, and CERANDA, each performing to their original music, supported by a team of 12 dancers, this project embodies my artistic vision and perspective of imposter syndrome and the many communities it affects within the world of entertainment… Link to watch below!

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Personally, I learned the value of time and people! Life changes quickly, tomorrow is not promised, and we need to take in every moment we get! My career began after the Covid-19 crisis so personally I didn’t have to endure what many others did in their career. However, I certainly recognize the importance of being flexible, that is one thing Covid has definitely helped me be in life!
