Today we’d like to introduce you to David Brown.
Hi David, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began my journey as a composer and pianist, fascinated by how music could express ideas that words never could. Over time, that fascination grew into a larger mission — to use music as a way to connect people and spark curiosity about the world. Today, I create videos for an audience of over 250,000 followers across social media, sharing stories, sounds, and insights from musical traditions around the globe.
Alongside composing and sharing music, I give talks and consult with individuals and organizations on how to build authentic, effective, and engaging presences on social media. I love helping people understand how creativity, storytelling, and genuine connection can inspire audiences and bring people together — whether they’re sharing their art, their work, or their mission. For me, everything comes back to the same idea: music and communication, at their best, are both about listening deeply and finding common ground.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road — but I think that’s true for any creative project. My journey into social media began almost by accident. I originally started learning about video production to promote an online piano lesson platform I had built. Along the way, I made a few short videos about music just to experiment — and when those went viral, I realized there was a much bigger audience out there that wanted to connect with music in a deeper way.
From there, it was a lot of trial and error. I had to figure out everything from lighting and sound to storytelling and editing — and how to translate something as complex as music theory or history into a one-minute video that still felt meaningful. There were times when the algorithm changed, or when I poured hours into a video that barely reached anyone. But each challenge helped me refine my approach. Over time, I’ve learned that social media success is less about chasing trends and more about staying authentic and consistent in sharing what you truly love.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a composer, pianist, and content creator with a deep curiosity about how music connects people across cultures. My background is in classical composition — I earned my doctorate at USC — but my interests have always spanned many different genres, from Balinese gamelan to Renaissance counterpoint to 1980s synth pop. On social media, I share stories and sounds from around the world to help people hear the beauty, history, and creativity behind different musical traditions.
Beyond composing and performing, I also speak and consult with individuals and organizations about how to build an authentic presence online. I love diving into the data — looking at analytics, trends, and audience behavior — and then translating that research into creative strategies that actually work.
What I’m most proud of is the community that’s grown around this work. I get messages every day from people who say a video helped them discover a new kind of music or inspired them to start learning an instrument. I think what sets me apart is that I approach social media the same way I approach music: with curiosity, craftsmanship, and a belief that connection — not just content — is what really matters.
How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happiest is spending time with my family and seeing the world through my children’s eyes. It reminds me of why I do what I do — to make the world they inherit a little more connected, curious, and compassionate. This is especially important to me as the father of a special needs child. Whether it’s through music, teaching, or helping others share their voices online, I find real joy in seeing creativity spark understanding between people. Knowing that my work can contribute, even in a small way, to that kind of positive impact is what keeps me going.
