Today we’d like to introduce you to Ciel Shi.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Absolutely. My journey has been quite a whirlwind, filled with twists and turns, but it’s shaped me into who I am today. It all started in Harbin, where I was born and raised. From a young age, I was drawn to the world of performing arts. I actually began acting in my local cable networks when I was just 5 years old, after being scouted even before I hit pre-school! It was surreal to have people recognize me on the streets even at that age.
When I was 13, I embarked on a bold adventure by going abroad as a foreign exchange student to Sydney, Australia. It was a pivotal moment in my life, where I not only continued my education but also delved into dance as part of the school’s team at Burwood Girl’s High School. But the journey didn’t stop there. At 15, I made another big leap, this time to the United States.
Life threw its challenges at me, and unfortunately, pursuing art took a backseat for a while. However, I never lost my passion for it. Instead, I pursued a degree in business communication at UCSB. After graduating, I ventured into the world of entrepreneurship, starting my own marketing firm. It was a valuable experience, but deep down, I knew my heart belonged to the arts.
The turning point came when I booked the lead role in a period film promo. Working with director Suzy Saches was incredibly inspiring, and her encouragement reignited my acting dreams. I took the leap and enrolled at the New York Film Academy in 2023 to hone my craft.
During my time at NYFA, I landed my first commercial independently, a project for Duolingo and Peacock TV. From there, doors began to open. In my first year in the entertainment industry, I booked multiple TV and internet commercials, including some principal roles, as well as music videos and feature films. In the same month the Duolingo project broadcasted, my agent scouted me and signed me on the spot.
One of the highlights of my journey so far has been co-producing a feature film starring Alec Baldwin and Esai Morales, which wrapped in September. It’s been a whirlwind of auditions, callbacks, and late-night shoots, but every moment has been worth it.
Today, I stand here, grateful for the journey that brought me to this point. It’s a testament to perseverance, passion, and never giving up on your dreams, no matter the obstacles. And while the path may not have been straightforward, I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s all part of the story that has shaped me as both an artist and an entrepreneur.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth? Not exactly. My journey has been more like a rollercoaster ride with its ups and downs. One of the biggest struggles was undoubtedly the decision to put my passion for art on hold when I left my home country. Life threw some curveballs, and I had to prioritize stability and practicality, which meant focusing on my business communication degree and starting my own firm.
Transitioning back into acting wasn’t without its challenges either. It took time to rebuild connections and find my footing in a new industry. There were auditions that didn’t pan out, moments of self-doubt, and the inevitable rejections that come with this profession.
But every setback served as a lesson and a motivator to push harder. It was a test of resilience, reminding me of why I pursued this path in the first place. And now, looking back, I can say that those struggles were integral to my growth as both an artist and an entrepreneur.
They taught me perseverance, the importance of staying true to my passion, and the value of never giving up on my dreams, no matter the obstacles. So, while the road may not have been smooth, every bump and detour ultimately led me to where I am today, and for that, I’m grateful
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As an actor, I specialize in bringing characters to life on screen, known for my versatility across commercials, feature films, and more. My journey, from childhood roles in my hometown to international experiences and entrepreneurship, defines my unique approach. I’m proud of my ability to balance artistic pursuits with business acumen, finding success in both realms. This blend of talent, resilience, and dedication sets me apart, allowing me to thrive in a competitive industry. Whether on set or behind the scenes, I approach each endeavor with unwavering passion and commitment to excellence.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In the next 5-10 years, the entertainment industry is poised for significant shifts, particularly with the rise of short vertical series originating from Asia and gaining global prominence. Asian representations are set to grow fiercely, reflecting a broader trend towards diverse storytelling and inclusivity. This shift signals a departure from traditional formats and a greater emphasis on innovative content delivery methods and culturally diverse narratives, reshaping the landscape of entertainment on a global scale.
