Today we’d like to introduce you to Brynn Evida.
Hi Brynn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I love to look back on when I started doing live music photography, especially when I see how far I’ve come. I started as a 14-year-old girl bringing her camera to any venue in Arizona that would let it in. Now, almost six years later, I’ve gotten to make the move to Los Angeles to photograph my favorite bands and make a living doing the thing that makes me the happiest.
Within those six years, there has been an immense amount of hard work, self-doubt, confidence-building, learning, and growth. I’m thankful that I had room to navigate growing pains and failures in safe environments as a young girl with people who believed in me. Without these experiences, I would never have made it all the way to LA, and I certainly wouldn’t have had the privilege of making a career out of capturing images.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Through my eyes, my road has been very tumultuous. It’s easy to see the glamorous side of freelancing on social media, but I find comfort in having conversations with my peers about the struggles we face. Usually, they are dealing with the very same issues. Personally, I worry less about how I’m going to pay my rent and more about the pressure I put on myself to perform. I have to step back often to remind myself that my expectations are unrealistic and mistakes have always led to great lessons.
This pressure comes from a long ongoing battle with my mental health. Depression, anxiety, and ADHD have been an internal fight that has often left me paralyzed in bed for multiple days frustrated by what I wasn’t accomplishing but not having any motivation to be productive. I wouldn’t take on certain tasks because I knew that I wouldn’t complete them and I would let somebody else down in the process. My ADHD diagnosis and treatment this past year has given me hope. I’m rebuilding the trust I lost within myself, which is allowing me to take on greater projects and hold confidence that I’ll complete them. This journey is allowing me to build my business and love myself, which are both experiences I’ve never fully had before.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a photographer specializing in the music industry. My entire life has been based around music, including my degree in Music Business, so this scene is where I am the most comfortable. Last year I had the opportunity to photograph My Chemical Romance, a bucket list item and a half in my regard. They are my favorite artist of all time, and I thought that requesting a pass to shoot them was going to end in me sitting in the nosebleeds with a ticket I paid for and no response from the publicist. I hadn’t learned to believe in myself yet. I’m so grateful that the story ends with me standing in the photo pit of The Forum staring with wonder at all of the people who filled the sold-out venue behind me. It was my first time seeing such a large building from this perspective, and I chase the high that I had at that moment.
When I speak about how far I’ve come, this is usually what I refer to. A picture of me, 13, standing in front of the stage after Gerard Way performed his solo show in Arizona. Fast forward to me, 19, standing in front of the stage that My Chemical Romance would soon grace at the legendary Forum. Cameras around neck, photo pass on, grinning ear to ear. It built my confidence and healed me at a time when I needed it the most.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I used to say something like hard-working or focused when I’d get asked questions like this. I still have so much to learn, but my new answer is the ability to listen. Listening is definitely a skill, and I am always so focused on trying to scoop up any information from other conversations being had nearby between photographers. I learned so much more than I would by participating in the conversation myself.
