Today we’d like to introduce you to Anndrea Villarreal.
Hi Anndrea, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I didn’t go to fashion school; my mom taught me how to sew when I was 12. I started Ms. Limón V in my bedroom on my 19th birthday and navigated the ins and outs of everything while trying to apply things I learned in business class and by stalking fashion students on Tumblr. A lot of this has been trial and error with a lot of experimentation. I went on to curate my own fashion shows, and now host multi-designer fashion shows both at my shop and venues.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. There’s been a lot potholes and unevenness. One thing about being an independent designer is having to fund everything yourself. There were times I was juggling three jobs and school while designing and just trying to be a young woman— these are all separate struggles on their own. I don’t know how I juggled them all, along with running my own business and designing. I do think trying to be a businesswoman and a designer at the same time is sometimes the hardest part.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a creator. I create and design jewelry, swimwear, lingerie, sleepwear, formal wear, streetwear, and now purses. I’m a micro business doing everything myself. I specialize in custom work but do have catalog items. I also curate events to share my platform and experience with other independent designers and upcoming models. I believe the table is big enough for all of us to eat at.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
My first idea for brand name was WahtEvur when I was 17. I had completely forgotten about it until recently when going through my old memory box.
