Today we’d like to introduce you to Andu Jetpack.
Hi Andu, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My name is Jetpack, born in Bucharest, Romania, in the year 2000. My childhood was immersed in the allure of music and the arts. I spent hours glued to the TV, watching MTV, yearning for the day when I could be one of those musicians making magic on screen. But life had other plans for me. Poverty and constant relocations made it impossible for me to afford instruments, equipment, or music classes.
Walking through the streets of Bucharest, I’d gaze longingly at the drum sets, guitars, and microphones displayed in shop windows, wondering why those dreams felt so out of reach. When I turned 8, circumstances led me to a smaller town where I had to live with my grandmother. It was there, around the age of 13-14, that I stumbled upon a game-changer – a laptop. Little did I know it would open the door to a whole new world of music creation.
Life took me on a journey from Bucharest to Marseille, France, for nine months with my mother, and then to San Diego, California, to live with my dad for the first time in my life. Adjusting to the American education system was tough, especially as a Romanian immigrant. The lack of friends and social activities, however, turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It gave me more time to immerse myself in my true love – music.
High school, with its challenges, had inadvertently become a training ground for my musical journey. As I navigated the complexities of a new system, I found solace in creating music. Now, with my own apartment and a thriving side business, I was one step closer to realizing my dream.
The pivotal moment came when I moved to Long Beach for college and got my own apartment. Fueled by a burning passion for music, I started a side business. I began recording, mixing, and producing for various underground artists in the area. It wasn’t just about honing my skills; it was a platform to collaborate with other rising talents.
This is my story – a tale of resilience, perseverance, and the unwavering pursuit of a passion. From the streets of Bucharest to the music studios of Long Beach, every note, beat, and production is a testament to the power of determination and the belief that talent can thrive against all odds.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, the road hasn’t been smooth for me. I faced several challenges along the way. Poverty was a constant obstacle, preventing me from affording instruments, equipment, or formal music education during my childhood in Romania. The frequent relocations also added another layer of difficulty, making it harder to establish stability and pursue my musical dreams.
Moving to a smaller town to live with my grandmother at the age of 8 brought about a change in surroundings, and it wasn’t until I discovered music production on a laptop at around 13-14 that things began to look up. The subsequent moves to Marseille, France, and then to San Diego, California, brought cultural and educational adjustments that were challenging, particularly as a Romanian immigrant.
High school in the United States was not the easiest experience, as I struggled to fit into a new system and social environment. However, the lack of friends and social activities during this time allowed me to channel more energy into my music, turning adversity into an opportunity for creative focus.
Ultimately, these challenges paved the way for my musical journey, shaping my resilience and determination. Each obstacle became a steppingstone, leading me from the streets of Bucharest to the music studios of Long Beach.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
